Bluescreens and repetitive video card fuckups -
I built this PC a few years back but do have some rather old parts, such as my HDD and my power supply. My PSU is around 5 years old and the HDD is probably around 7. The rest of the parts are relatively new. When I upgraded my video card to a 770, the first thing I noticed is that it couldn't overclock. I'm not an expert on overclocking and that's why I don't overclock by a big amount. If I overclocked by even 50~ MHz it would make my PC crash.
I thought maybe I just had got a bad card and didn't really bother about it and just used it normally. But after a few years of use it started crashing again, and the only thing that seemed to fix it was to underclock my card about 50mhz of the base clock and 100 on the memory. By this time the warranty was expired. I don't remember the exact circumstances of the crashes but I think my monitor would just turn black and I would have to restart. Sometimes the game I was playing would just stop responding, too.
So when I got a GTX 970 I thought all my problems would be fixed. I tried to overclock it a bit while playing skyrim, and my screen turned to a green colour and my speakers buzzed; my pc crashed. Obviously after that happened I stopped messing around with it. It worked perfectly for about 3 months but then it started to crash the same way it did before, a crash to a solid colour and buzzing speakers. It'd happen on many games. Then some time later, the card just died. It crashed and wouldn't turn back on, I tried reseating and everything, tried my old graphics card, and it worked. So it was the 970.
I sent it back to Gigabyte for warranty and it was indeed broken and they are currently sending a new one. I'm using my old 770 for time being. I am obviously skeptical about putting it back in as there seems to be a pattern with my cards.
Another issue is that during the time being of using my 770, I am getting random bluescreens. Sometimes twice a day, sometimes only once a week. The error is KERNAL DATA INPAGE ERROR, which I read apparently had something to do with memory from hdd/ram.
Is my PSU to blame for my video cards? I am thinking of buying a new one, as its pretty old. Is the bluescreen error something unrelated?
