Replace 9800pro with...

Yes, I'm saving my money and building a new copmuter from scratch (see new build forum) so save your breath.

I've got a 5 year old computer that didn't get one upgrade, but the video card just died (or my monitor died, but I'm guessing its the card). It ran everything suprisingly well still, think the cpu was an old amd 2800+, but anyway, its worth resurrecting for a minimal cost. I'd like to turn it into a basic home theatre system or something of that sort.

Anyway, what would you recommend getting to replace the 9800pro that's cheap enough to make it worthwhile?

Assuming that system take an AGP graphics card, I'd probably suggest something like the ATI HD 3650.

But one word of caution: Support for AGP is drying up quickly, drivers may be less than easy to come by, and read the Newegg reviews, they often contain information on how a previous user has solved a particular problem that you may, or may not, face.

I guess 50$ isn't too bad; its either 50$ or 200$ by the time I got a new value mobo/cpu/gpu/memory. The HDMI output is nice on that 3450!
