I have an older home built computer with an AMD 959 pin CPU socket. It currently sports an Athlon 64 X2 5400+ AM2 CPU @2.8MHz. I use the machine digitizing photos and other media. Would it be worthwhile to install an AM2+ CPU? The socket and motherboard will accept with an AM2, AM2+, or AM3 CPU. The machine has win10 (not by choice) with 16GB RAM.

There appear to be two Phenom CPU that you could update to that are at least faster clock. I cannot recall and did not check core count, so that could be a consideration. If you can find one inexpensive enough in your market and are willing to try, why not?

IMO this consideration would be talking about $20 or so value. Regardless, it will likely be a pretty incomprehensible change unless you have a stopwatch in your hand. Consideration should be made for the labor to do so and the risk of it not working afterwards.
