Dell XPS 2710
i7-3770S (with WiDi)
Dell brand wireless mini card (WLAN 2.4GHz only + Bluetooth)
Windows 7

Hello.
Trying to get WiDi on my PC. Processor is compatible but Dell wireless adapter is not.

1. If I replace the Wireless Dell mini-Card to an Intel WiDi, update drivers etc. will WiDi work?

2. If I replace with a Dual band wireless adapter, will the 5GHz wifi work?

Appreciate any suggestions.
Thank you
Ken

If you're talking about the OEM WiFi adaptor, it has to be Dell. I suggest that you go get yourself a PCI express WiFI card. They cost about $30. All you do is install it in a PCI express slot (usually x1), run the driver and you're good to go. Yes, dual band means 2.4 and 5 GHz switching.

Thanks sirstinky. You are correct. The current wifi adapter is a Dell DW1703. See link to photo. DropBox. Can you tell me if this is HMC or M.2? How can I distinguish which is which & which one I need? Are they interchangeable?
Thank you
Ken

So your PC is an all-in-one, basically it's a desktop/laptop hybrid like my old HP Touchsmart IQ-770. It shares a lot of features with a laptop including the WiFi card. Those mini cards fit into similar slots that do look an awful lot like an m.2 mini SATA socket, but it's not the same. It's actually a PCI express interface meant only for WiFi cards. So for yours, you need to replace it with the exact part number or it won't work. You need this one: http://www.amazon.com/DW1703-802-11-Wireless-Bluetooth-PCI-E/dp/B00BTYFLKK

You can cross-reference the part numbers (DW1730) and other identifiers (like Atheros AR5b225) to make sure it will work. Also check your PC's service manual for parts compatibility.

Hope that helps

Thanks Sirstinky but now I'm more confused. I already have a DW1703 which works fine but doesn't have WiDi. That's why I need to replace it. If I replace with an Intel WiDi mini card will WiDi work.
Thanks

Hey. Ohhhh you are talking about wireless display! Well widi and wifi aren't the same. Widi moves video signals only. To get it for your pcy you need this: http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16815141002&cm_re=intel_widi_tv_adapter-_-15-141-002-_-Product

That's the widi adapter and transmitter. The transmitter and adapter plug into your pc I think usb and the receiver plugs into your TVs HDMI input. You shouldn't have any trouble getting it to work. It's a fairly new technology so I had to pick my brain about it a little.

This is futile. After 3 replies you've finally thought it might help to read my first post. Then after reading it, you've decided to ignore it. You obviously have a problem with simple comprehension. This is not only unhelpful, but is destructive, & leads to frustration, delays, misinformation for readers & risks damaging readers equipment.

Ken, I apologize for the confusion, but I totally get what you're telling me...

Let me reiterate if I wasn't clear. I recommended the adapter set in the link because:

Your PC isn't WiDi enabled. No, you can't buy one from Intel. There are only certain devices out there that come with WiDi hardware built in, and they are mostly mobile devices (laptops, 2 in 1's, convertible tablets, and tablets) Yes, the CPU is compatible, but the hardware isn't. If you want WiDi, there's only 2 ways to get it:

Buy a WiDi enabled device (unfortunately, your PC doesn't have WiDi on board). Currently, only laptops, 2 in 1 devices (convertibles) and tablets have WiDi.

-or-

Get the adapter and receiver in the link. It's designed for PC's that don't have WiDi.

Does that make sense?

Let me know If I can help with anything else.
Thanks
