Hi all, years ago I bought a NAS from Acer "Aspire Easystore", part. no. ST.EASYL.2TB.

Yesterday 1 of the 4 hard disks failed (raid 5). Looking on the internet for an, exactly the same, new one I remained shocked. No replacements parts are available, only used ones ! So I copied all to another disk and shut off the nas.

Now. Which hdd can i buy as a safe subsitute without compromising the remaining data.

The NAS mounts 4 Seagate's Baracude 7200.10 model Seagate ST3500830AS

Hope somebody can advise on this.

I would start by posting a question to the Acer community forum -- http://community.acer.com/t5/Acer-Community/ct-p/en?profile.language=en&stoprd=true

Asking if there is any known limitations on replacing disks. There could be limitations on specific brands or versions.

Most NAS can use a different model disk (not optimal, but sometimes it can't be avoided). If you get a 1TB disk, it will only use 1/2 of it BUT it should bring your RAID 5 back from degraded. It might be best to stick with Seagate disks, but that is just a guess.

Tks for the smart suggestion. Contacted Seagate in the mean time to find out which model equals which, but they suggested to contact ACER as they might have modified the disks. Contacted ACER who sent me a very high price offer for 1 new HDD. Much cheaper to buy a new NAS.

Funny. You think to have a save backup system with replacable disks. To find out you cannot buy them anymore.

That is also why I recommended the forum rather than the company. That way you get user experience rather than just the company "line" ...

Mmm, a lot of views and very little replies. Very quit in the server and storage area of ACER. Unfortunately I need to solve this problem.

Somebody has experience with changing HDD in NAS devices ??

Unfortunately experience with one brand has no relevance for another. I have never seen that hardware.
