Question Replace M.2 SSD in laptop by larger SSD

I would like to upgrade the SSD in my Dell Inspiron 7
It's a Toshiba M.2 2280 256Gb SATA, and I was thinking installing a 512Gb or bigger
How should I proceed knowing there is only 1xM.2 slot in my laptop? Can I do it with a clone software and a M.2 to USB adapter such as this one:

It means install new SSD in USB enclosure, clone current to new, then install new in laptop?

Yes you can do that but I would clone from old SSD to newly installed one.

You mean install new in laptop and old (current) in USB enclosure and clone? But in that case, laptop won't boot with new ("blank") SSD.....!
What software (free ) would you recommend?
