Replace motherboard, or just graphics card?

I have a (relatively) dated desktop that has served me well for about 5 years. I
got it when the i series was first becoming common. In a recent thunder storm
(it was plugged into a surge protector) the video stopped working after a
lightning strike. I can hear audio upon startup, so I think the graphics card is
my issue.

The system came with a micro atx board (ibuypower sale on newegg) that won't
support modern graphics cards, so I was thinking of taking these lemons and
making lemonade by replacing the motherboard along with the graphics card.

I have some technical knowledge and experience with replacing g hardware, but I
haven't ever replaced a motherboard in a machine that is already functioning.
are there certain things to look out for?

I know I need one with a certain socket type, but is it even worth it? Or should
I look for a motherboard/graphics card/CPU combo out there to do a real upgrade?

It's worth mentioning that I'm a college student who is looking to save as much
money as possible. I'll be purchasing a new laptop/ultra book soon, too. The
main purpose of this system is for media use and some occasional games (but I
like to run things on high graphics on my living room tv).

Any assistance or comments would be appreciated.

Why do you say your current motherboard will not support current graphic cards and what graphic card is currently installed? Depending on it's age, just replacing the motherboard in not a wise suggestion. Ideally, you'd want to replace it all, but understanding financial limitations, just replacing the GPU would be preferred.
