I'm upgrading my old PC that I build several years ago.
There is a bit of background to this story, so bear with me.
New Components
Gigabyte Z170X-UD3
Intel i5-6600k
Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo
8gb stick of Crucial Ballistix (DDR4)
Integrated graphics for the time being
Old Components
Case (w/case fans)
OCZ600MXSP
The computer booted up and I installed windows 10 and everything was fine.
Except I noted that the front case intake fan wasn't working and neither were the lights on the front of the case.
So I opened it back up and looked at the front fans and couldn't find anything wrong. I took the opportunity to re-route some cables for a little better airflow and aesthetics.
Closed the case and powered it up.
I heard a pop and immedately cut off power to the computer and looked over everything.
(made sure all was plugged in correctly, etc).
Tried again and nothing lit up except the led's in my mouse.
Took out the motherboard and looked it over and smelled it (You know the smell).
The strongest burning odor was at the 8pin CPU power port and oddly at the CPU fan header.
The PSU also smelled fried. I tested the PSU using paper clip trick. The psu fan spun but not the case fan (that did work before).
I got a new motherboard and PSU and hooked everything up, (using the same CPU) but got no post, no lights (even on the usb mouse) and no beeps.
Tried moving ram into different slots to no avail.
Tried Clearing CMOS, no good.
Tested Coolermaster fan on another motherboard (The old rig) and it works.
Tested new PSU on old rig mobo and it works. Case speaker also works.
Tested case PW switch and it works.
I am at a loss. Since the mouse doesn't light up, it makes me wonder if this new mobo came DOA.
But I know that the CPU could be dead, but I have no way of testing it.
If the CPU is dead, wouldn't this motherboard at least give some indication of turning on or lighting up?
I was very careful handling the mobo and parts. Used thermal paste appropriately, etc.
Discharged static electricity and all very regularly.
