Earlier this week I had what I suspected was a burned out power supply. It was a 450 watt that came with the case when I did my build a few years ago. Right in the middle of some heavy 3D design work the computer shut off, as if someone had yanked the power cord out of the wall. Opened up the tower and noticed that when pressing the power button all the fans would twitch and the LED on the motherboard was solid green. Did the paper clip test and power supply powered right up but still thought maybe it was not dead but had just gone bad. Upgraded to a 650 watt and now I'm having another issue.
After installed the new power supply the system powered up just fine, that is with no monitors installed to the graphics card (just wanted to make sure it would power up since I wasn't 100% positive that it was the power supply before). As soon as I connected the monitors (also brand new, upgraded when I bought the power supply, 2 x 24" Samsung LED) and powered on there was no image on either screen and I noticed that the green power light on the case did not come on and the HDD red light was solid red and not flickering or flashing at all.
Naturally I thought this was a HDD failure so I unplugged all hard drives, disc drives, USB cards, basically everything but the motherboard, CPU, video card, and ram (2 x 2 gig and 2 x 1 gig). Still the same issue. So i started swapping out ram, having only one in and tried all four in all four slots, one at a time and still the same problem persists.
Even pulled out the video card just to see if I could get a green power light when I power on in case the video card had gone bad.
At this point I'm at a loss, the computer is a bit old as I built it about three years ago but I've had previous builds that lasted longer than this. I also don't have an internal speaker because you know, who the hell needs one of those these days.. that is until something like this comes up.
So short and sweet, installed new power supply and now computer wont POST even though all drives, fans, and video card fan are running. No power light and HDD red light is steady on start-up. No image on either monitor and I've already tried resetting the CMOS with the jumper. Any thoughts? Should I just go ahead and buy a new computer since this one is basically out of date anyways? Or should I purchase an internal speaker before I resort to drastic measures.
