Replaced PSU, Computer still shutting off Randomly

Well, installed an EVGA Supernova 650 watt into the system, and it is still shutting off randomly

System: Asus M5A99FX Pro 2.0 MB
AMD 8 core FX-8320 3.5
2 Western Digital 500gig HD
1 Asus internal optical
Cooler Master Hyper212EVO
Asus Strix GTX960
16G Kingston
XFX XTR 550 PSU Replaced with EVGA 650W
Windows 7 Home Premium SP1

It has gone as long as 2 weeks of 10 hours days without shutting down at all since this problem appeared about two months ago. Other times it has shut down within 20 minutes of booting up. It will usually boot right back up.

Things I have Done:
Replaced PSU cable to MB (I thought this was the problem at first)
Taken it down and cleaned it and put it back together
Replaced SATA cables to drives
Disabled all windows power management
Run Prime stress test, did not shut down
Run Mem test, passed.
Tested Drives with WD tool, passed
Monitored Voltages and Temps, with Speedfan, AI Suite, and AMD overdrive tool. No temp or voltage problems
Replaced Power cord.
Took it off the UPS and plugged it directly into wall
Flashed Bios
Replaced CMOS battery

Right after installing the new PSU, it booted right up, ran for 5 min, and shut down. It wouldn't restart on it's own, it tried, but kept powering back down. I pulled the CMOS battery and restarted it, and am typing on it now. When it's running, there are no anomalies. There is nothing in Event Viewer except the Unexpected Shutdown Error.

It is an OLD case. Is it possible it's the case wiring to the power button?
Or is my CPU dying a slow death? Or the MB?

I will take ANY suggestions at this point.

Not the problem, I am sure. I have it back on the UPS now, and it's firmly in there and am using the new power cord that came with the new PSU, and its nice and firmly plugged into the PSU.

I tested it in two different house outlets directly. Still shut down on me.

This computer is approx 18 months old now. The Case however is much much older, maybe 12 years?

No reason a XTR 550 would not have been able to power that system so I doubt the power supply is the issue. What are cpu temps? It could be thermal shutdown but I would think that would have happened during the prime95 test. It just cuts to black? No blue screens, error codes, or anything?

Your using a UPS? Have you tried it plugged directly into the wall?

Yep, tried two different house outlets. No blue screens No error codes. Powers down completely except for the MB light and the GPU light and the Network lights on the Ethernet connection.

It was running fine, I played some EQ2 for about 4 hours, then some Hearthstone, then streamed some video from Netflix, then did some actual work, it was up and running for about 15 hours straight before it shut down today and I replaced the PSU. When it shut down I was browsing forums, with nothing running, and getting ready for a NAP. Speed fan had the CPU temp at 36.

Temp never went over 48C from the log during any of those activities.

Right now AI Suite and Speedfan report the CPU is at 32C, and AMD says the thermal margin is averaging around 50


It is not overclocked, using the Normal Setting on the Bios.

I have that same motherboard. it's the blue SATA ports on the motherboard. that controller causes nothing but problems. I connected everything through the white/grey ones and disabled the 3rd party SATA controller in the bios and the problem was completely gone.

Okay, giving that a try. It may be a few days before it randomly shuts down again. I will let you guys know if that works, or if I ever figure out what exactly is going on. Eventually whatever it is will break completely = p

Good luck I had the same problem and it would also crash like 10% of the time when waking from sleep. After I disabled the 3rd party SATA controller never had the problem again. I did this back in Jan and it hasn't happened since. I used to experience it just like you, would be completely random when it would reboot, sometimes up for a week straight, others times it would happen several times in a single day.

I picked your answer as the best one, but unfortunately, it didn't work. When I first posted this problem the only answer was replace the PSU, which I did. So I think I am at the limit of what we can do here, and going to have to do something different.

I have another case, and now an extra PSU, So going to start building another machine in order to clear components one by one.

It finally did die completely. Just kept restarting and shutting down over and over. I pulled it apart and installed everything in another old case. I also put electrical tape over the extra sata connections, just in case. It wouldn't boot from the boot drive, hung on boot device. Tried to reinstall win7, but it wouldn't take it. Pulled another old HD out of the closet, and did a clean install of win7 on it. So, thinking now it was a bad power button on case, and restarting over and over killed the HD, or at least the win7 partition. Just finished reinstalling all the drivers and half the programs, and it hasn't shut down.

Running fine now in the new old case, but went and got her a nice new one. no shutdowns, no problems.

update for everyone else with a similar problem. So far, replacing the case has solved the problem.
