Yes, you'll notice a substantial difference. Just DON'T GET THE 5800!!!! It sucks. Or blows, for that matter. If it has to be one of those two, get the 5900u. But don't forget, the ATi 9800 Pro 128mb offers equal performance for $150 less.

hey all;

Here is the prices for a FX 5900 and R9800 Pro.

BFG Tech - FX 5900 $357.89 - CompuHQ.com (retail box)
ATI - Radeon 9800 Pro $336.89 - CompuHQ.com (retail box)

These are the cheapest prices i could find for the retail box on Pricewatch.com

LIES!!!!

The closest you can get is $270 if you want a OEM - bulk pack, cheap ass Sapphire Card.

ATI Fanboys...They suck at math too?

That price is NOT for the Ultra on the 5900, and the step down just doesn't compare adaqutely to the 9800 to be worth it. I'd suggest either the 5900 Ultra 256mb or the 9800 Pro 128mb/256mb depending on the price range being examined. He is right Xeen, the Ultra 5900 is about 150$ more than the ATi 128mb and they perform pretty damn close to the same.

shadus;

you cant compare the FX 5900 Ultra 256MB with the 9800 Pro 128MB, because the ultra has twice the amount of memory, hense the extra cost, oh and btw the 9800 pro 256MB costs just as much as the FX 5900 ultra 256MB, the comparasin wasnt right to begin with, furthermore qazwsx never mentioned anything about the Ultra version in his original post, daddywags was the one to make the incorrect comparasin.

The above statement implys that the FX 5900 is an inferior card, which is totally baseless.
The 9800 Pro 128MB and the FX 5900 128MB cards perform almost identically in all benchmarks, in some cases the ATI card outperforms the NVidia card, and in some cases the other way around, your only displaying your true ATI Fanboy colors.

I hate having to point out the obvious.

ATI Fanboys...they lack common sense too?

I most certainly can compare the 256mb card to the 128mb card because they perform about the same. I could also compare the 9800 256mb card to the 9800 128mb card. Value wise, the 9800 128mb card is an excellent deal compared to the 9800 256/5900 256 because it performs at the same level as both for about 150$ less... I don't care why there is a price difference if the performance remains the same.

If a 2.4c performs the same as a 2800+ it's a fair comparison, regardless of the fact that the 2.4c has a ceramic heat spreader that makes it cost more to manufacture than the 2800+.

Blah blah blah. Yada yada.

ATi Fanboy? ROFL, you need to read some other of my posts kiddo.

If anything I'm more nvidia camp than ati. I wont personally buy an ati card because of problems I had with the early radeons drivers and not being able to play any games on my pc for months.

Lets see...

At pretty much every site (hardocp, anandtech, etc) but here (the 5900 NU is more inline with the 9800P128 on Toms) it pretty much looks like this (Just went and checked to be sure I wasn't mis-remembering.):

NoAF, 5900 NU beats 9800. Any AF/AA/FSAA and the 9800 beats 5900 NU.
The 5900U pretty much wins across the board for the most part (it drops the ball here and there but for the most part it wins.)

The secondary fact is the 9800P256/5900U are comparable cards for the most part - be it price, speed, etc... the 5900U being slightly faster, the IQ on the 9800P256 being slightly better (there was a big difference at one point but not anymore so far as I can tell from SS)... however, the 9800P128 performs on level with the 9800P256 and occasionally better *except* at 1600 or higher res. IMO based on the vast majority of benchies across various sites the 9800P128 is a better card than the 5900NU, I would argue that the 5900U is a better card than the 9800P256 however. Shrug, tit for a tat. I'm not rabid about either platform, fact of the matter is, they both cheat. Sites have favorites and tweak for them and marketing is a bunch of bs in general. You just have to form opinions based on what you read and see. That is what I've read and seen, if you dont like it, tough sh!t. Opinions are like a$$holes, everyone has one and everyone thinks theirs is the only one that doesn't stink.
Edited by Shadus on 07/16/03 01:31 PM.

It's okay Shadus, I think he was calling me a fanboy. I'm not a fanboy. I simply thought he was referring to the ($500) 5900 ultra. A simple misunderstanding, go ahead and shoot me.

5900ultra ($500) = 9800 256 ($500)
9800 256 = 9800 128 ($350)
therefore, 5900ultra = 9800 128. (-$150)

As for the 5900 nonultra please (anyone) link me to a site with a review of it. I haven't seen one yet, and I'd like to.

And Xeen, RELAX, buddy, it's going to be OKAY.

Wet blankets can hurt like hell if you snap em just right. ;)

So why was most of the 5900 talk about the 256mb version? Isn't there a 128mb version that costs $100 less and performs just about as good?

heya itj311;

Yes that is correct, the latest games cant really take advantage of the extra memory except when jack up the resolution, and turn on all the toys, im sure the ones next year, or in a couple of years will though.
