Replacement Graphics Card

Hi,

I was looking for a replacement for my Graphics Card (not changing yet... but wanting to know what the back up replacement would be!)

My current GFX is ASUS GTS250, however I notice that they are getting a bit thin on the ground:

the rest of the computer is

Sonata 3 case (with Earthwatts 500 I think)
E8400


Mainly, I am wondering what card could go in, given the power constraints... I would prefer Nvidia, as that is what I am familiar with...

I am not 100% sure what power connectors I have spare... but I should have 2 6-pin power (I can only see one, the one in the present video card... the other one seems to be hiding in the bundle of cables that I tied off...)... there are also a few spare 4 pins?

The new GTS250 is the GTS450. That will give you similar performance. Anything higher then that will be faster. You really want a GTX460 or GTX560 if you want to upgrade.

What are you planning exactly?

The immediate replacement for that would be a GTS450. About the same horsepower with added Dx11 support.

If you are going for an upgrade, I'd suggest a HD6870, which has the same TDP as a GTS250 (150W). The equivalent Nvidia card, the GTX560 consumes 20W more, but should be OK.

as allready mentioned the new GTS250 is the GTS450... however with a 128bit memory interface the GTS450 is fine for lower resolutions.... however if like me you like to run games at 1920x1080 i would steer clear and go for the reasonably priced GTX550ti
this can be snapped up for around £100($130 ) and wipes the floor with the GTS450.... and the superior 192bit memory interface will cope with higher resolutions better
on the ati side of things the radeon HD5770 has been one of the most popular cards over the last 12 months.... and has some impressive specs including a 850mhz core clock and 1gb(2gb in some models ) of gddr5 memory running at 4800mhz
theres also 800 stream processors however this again only supports a 128bit memory interface,but seems to cope better at higher resolutions than the GTS450
that said for a snip over £100 theres the "radeon HD6790" which has a 256bit memory interface and similar specs to the HD5770 ...... i think the only improvement from the HD5770 is the better interface(memory) and the memory speed has been dropped by 600mhz to 4200mhz effective

this includes a geforce 9600gt for just £34... and the powerful GTX260 for just £79... and allthough the GTX260 is a few years old it still has the power to cope with any of the latest games . .. also this is the 216 stream processor model and not the original 192 version

Thanks for the replies... I would be currently running at just 1680 by 1050 resolution, and so an upgrade really isn't neccessary, just a replacement... the GTS450 or GTX 550 Ti sound good, I will look into it... can I just double check that I will have enough power and pins to run them?
