Hi there,

I broke my Toshisba laptop a while ago within a couple weeks of buying it. Ironically they were discontinued the same week I broke it.

I got a quote on repair and was told the following was broken:

  • SATA controller (the part is no longer made and the whole motherboard would have to be replaced - apparently)
Hinge (which I can just duct tape lol..)

So I was wondering if there are any compatible parts that replace the SATA controller without getting a whole new motherboard. I don't know much about computers and what a SATA controller is other than that it's something to do with the hard drive.

Here is the link of all the website page: http://www.mytoshiba.co.nz/products/computers/satellite/l50/pskxsa-00v00g/specifications

Otherwise here are them:

  • CPU AMD A6-7310 Quad Core (2.0GHz-2.4GHz, 1600MHz MC, 2MB L2 Cache)
    Operating System Windows 8.1 (64bit)
Screen Size 15.6" HD Widescreen with LED Backlit Display
    Resolution 1366 x 768
    Screen Aspect Ratio 16:9
    Memory 8GB DDR3L (1600Mhz)
RAM slot allocation One slot used, one slot free - Total memory expandable to 16GB - Via easy access panel
    Storage 1TB (5400 rpm) SATA
    Graphics 2GB AMD Radeon™ R5 M330 Graphics
    Optical Disc Drive DVD-SuperMulti Drive
Audio Combined Microphone & Headphone ports
    Sound Skullcandy

I have since moved on to a much better laptop but would still like to get this repaired and move on with my life.

For what ever reason the repair guy was wrong, the computer wouldn't get past the opening Toshiba screen or window 8 repair service.. Thank you so much in advance, sorry for my bad english i'm from england.

Solution
Was trying to find out if anything can be done with the Drive like loading an OS, often see problems diagnosed as a 'broke SATA controller' when it's actually the drive type isn't set correctly in the BIOS i.e. it's set to a default of IDE when the drive itself has been set up as AHCI, etc. or something else.
