Replacing 5.1 channels with monitor speakers?

I was wondering if its possible to somehow incorporate monitor speakers into a 5.1 surround set.

I have a 3 monitor setup and would like to replace the left/right/center satellite speakers of my 5.1 surround set with the built in monitor speakers. Is it possible to somehow rig them into my receiver where normally my satellite speakers would go?

If it can be done with a small device that could possibly replace my largely useless receiver, I would also be interested in that. (I have a receiver because I used to have multiple sources. I no longer do.)

I have tried fudging with virtual audio cable to pipe some channels through my motherboards onboard soundcard, but for some reason it refuses to play nice.

It might theoretically be possible, but I wouldn't recommend it. At least 90% of monitors (and even some televisions now, from what I've read) that come with speakers use cheap earbud-type speakers that sound absurdly tinny when amplified enough to hear from a few feet away, likely to make you wonder why the monitor manufacturer even bothered including speakers.

What monitors do you have? Chances are, your existing speakers or even $10 no-name stereo computer speakers from Radio Shack would sound better than the monitor speakers.

The side monitors are just a pair of cheap Hanspree ones. So chances are you are correct about them being tinny. I just wanted to get rid of a mess of wires and the extra speakers on my shelves is all. But I guess ill just have to live with it for the sake of having proper sound quality. 😉
