Replacing a dead R9 290

Hi there,

I'm looking at the possibility of potentially replacing my Asus R9 290 direct oc card that basically just fried on me.

There most direct upgrade appears to be the R9 390 for obvious reasons but I don't really need an upgrade, a direct replacement for the R9 290 that's not as expensive would be ideal. The R9 290 isn't available locally for me anymore.

I looked at the R9 380 but from the stats at least it seems like a bit of a downgrade. Though I considered getting an R9 380 now and a second one for crossfire later, any thoughts on this?

Does anyone have any other recommendations? I'll consider Nvidia options too though I'm less familiar with the brand.

Your 290 should be still under warranty right? I would just send it back to Asus for replacement.

The 390 isnt really an upgrade anyway, its just a 290 with more vram and a overclock. On the Nvidia side, the 970 and 980 would be the best options.

Its not, unfortunately, the 290 smashes the 380x by about 25%

That 25% extra relative performance gap doesn't come out to 25% more performance, but the 390 would be a viable option. I'm not certain about that site, as I highly doubt a 390x would be 10-15FPS behind a 970 on any game, even ones that favor nvidia.

You dont trust techpowerup? Its one of the best imo, and been around for years. You must be misreading it, the 390x isnt behind the 970?

the performance gap in terms of fps depends entirely on the game and how demanding it is.

Not very demanding:

COD 4 @ 1080p
380x :88.2fps
290: 106.6

Quite demanding:

Witcher3 @ 1080p
380x :28fps
290: 31.9fps

Just seems kinda strange that a $400 card is being easily beaten by a $275 card. I would either try to get the card RMA'd, or get a 390. Although I would assume if you're looking for a different card you can't get a replacement.

Well, for example, an r9 390x shouldn't be getting almost the exact same fps as a 970 on gtav.

At 1080p, i dont see why not. Look at the 1440p benchmarks, the 390x gets a big lead, matches other benchmarks on the internet of GTA V.

I am trying to go the RMA route, but just wanted to know my options if for some reason that wasn't going to work. Got a spare card in the meantime. Thanks for the answers guys!
