What can I replace a seagate st31000528as hard drive with? Does it need to be the same? I have a HP p6774y Amd Phenom(tm) II x4840t processor 2.90 ghz, 6gb ram, 64 bit OS.

the hard drive won't boot up and I can't even get the dvd drive to boot up the repair Dvd.

So I need to know if I have to get the exact same drive or is there another compatible one I can get.

That is a basic 1tb Sata HD. Pretty much any SATA disk can be used to replace it. I recommend WD or HGST. I'm pretty sure it can support up to at least a 4tb, but it only shipped with a 1tb.
But before you go and spend money on a 6 year old PC, have you considered just replacing it? Would not cost very much to get a brand new PC which is a little faster.
If you do want to fix it, turn it off and unplug the HD and make sure you are trouble shooting the right device. Try and boot without a HD and see if you get past the BIOS post. You should. Next you can put your HD in a external enclosure and try disk repair from a 2nd PC.

Thanks, I thought that I could use a different brand but was not sure. I paid almost 700 for the computer when I got it, it was the top of the line then. I have 2 others of the same and they are doing good so I just wanted to change the HD if possible.
