Replacing card

Please if you could help a novice in upgrading his graphics card.

This is my system...intel q6600
asus p5k-e/wifi-ap
antec p182 atx mid tower case
corsair cmpsu-620hx
seagate barracuda 7200.10 500gb sata2
samsung sh-s203n dvd
window xp pro oem sp2
creative s/b x-fi xtreme
diamond viper radeon hd 3850 256mb gddr3
corsair xms2 twin2x2048-6400c4 4gbx1gb

Want to swap out graphics card for this model..XFX Radeon HD 4870 750MHZ 1GB 3.6GHZ GDDR5 PCI-E
Part#: HD487AZWFC

a detailed step by step would help me avoid a catastrophe.

this is alittle off what ur asking but u need to throw the seagate barracuda 7200.10 500gb sata2 FAR as u can . it will not last over 6 months

thanks BlueScreen but both instructions are outdated and video is not clear enough to understand.

Basically, to sum up the video. Disable the driver to the current video card. Shut down computer, take out old card, put in new card. Boot up and install drivers of new card.

You can also just uninstall the old drivers if you want - instead of disable, but if you have problems with the new card, the old driver will still be on the computer, if you just disable.

That is the same as the articles posted - why do you think the articles are outdated? (it was using XP? - it is the same process).

Here's my procedure:

1. Uninstall current video card drivers.
2. Reboot and *** down machine after finishes loading.
3. Turn PSU switch off but leave cord plugged in (grounding).
4. Remove old card / install new card.
5. Boot to windows, install new drivers from CD or download latest and greatest.

If you have looked at these sites and do not see the difference to to-days cards and have read my reference to being a novice (computer was built for me by ncix) I think you may have missed the point.

Here, this is about as step by step as i can get.

Click start, right click computer, go to the device manager, under display adapters right click on your current graphics card, properties, drivers, uninstall. Then shut down the machine. Unplug it and move it to an uncarpeted area. Unscrew the screws on the back of the case, remove the side panel. Undo the screw that holds the card in, lift it straight up, if it does not come up easy rock it back and forth from end to end, never from side to side, never. Insert new card in the same fashion, screw the screw back in, plug in a power connector if necessary. Close up the machine, plug it all back in, then boot it up and install the new display drivers.

Thanks to all the one spot im not clear on is the power supply. Current card has one 6pin connector and new one has two 6pins. As I didn't hook-up power am unfamiliar with the modular style of the corsair 620hx. Is it as simple as taking another 6 pin cable and connecting both ends?

Yup, just plug another one into your PSU and run it to the new card
