Hey guys. I'm using a copy of Windows 8.1. I'm installing a new cpu and mobo. I'll also be putting in a new hard drive along with my previous one.

Will my OS and key originally used by the previous motherboard work on the new one? Before installing the board, do I need to format the previous hard drive containing Windows as well? If there's anything else I need to know, please do. Thanks.

Solution
I have done this and I consider this the "clean" way to do it, and legal:

1. Clean install the old OS copy (DISC?) onto the new machine, when asked "register automatically when online," tick NO.
2. Now UN_Register Windows from old machine.
3. Register Windows on new machine, if complains, it displays a tel# to call, do so, and the automated attendant will guide you through a long-ist registration procedure, when asked "how many machines" SAY ONE. At the end is should say SUCCESSFUL. The command SLMGR /DLV should verify with STATUS: LICENSED.
4. Now you can move your old drive to the new machine as your secondary data drive.

Yeah, its a disc. So unregister windows, replace the hardware, call Microsoft, install Windows on the old drive? The key will still work, right?
