My 3 year old Gainward Geforce 4 Ti 4200 128 mb GPU has been having some fan trouble recently. It sounds like there is a hedge trimmer in my living room for hours on end.

I wanted to replace the fan spending as little as possible, but after much research the only thing I have been able to find that "says" it is compatible with GF4 Ti's is the Arctic Cooling VGA Cooler:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-186-117&depa=0

So I bought this today. My concern however is whether it will be compatible with the Gainward card I have as I have read a few reviews saying it doesn't work with ALL GF4's ...

Also, did I make a mistake in buying this?.. are there cheaper options out there?

Any info would be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

If it fits, use it. If it doesn't, send it back.

Make sure there's no hedge trimmer running in the living room.

Seriously, if you can't find an aftermarket unit that'll fit, either you bring your card to the store and see if they can find/order one for you or check in eBay for a blown card w/a still running cooler/fan combo. That should save you some money.

I looked at the link you put in the thread and I have a similar cooler except it's made for ATi. They're very quiet.

Unless your card maker strayed from the nVidia refrence design by a large margin, the arctic cooler will fit. The Iceberq 4 cooler will work also. I have the ATi model on my 9800 as we speak.

A "TI 4200".

They are as rare as "hens teeth" here in Perth.

Tried all secondhand PC stores(many) and none available or just won't sell. All I can buy is a GF4 MX 440 64mb 128bit and that has SDR ram - not DDR.

You can fit any near suitable fan to that card with a bit of modification.

The 2 fans on my Leadtek GF4 Ti4400 did the same thing awhile back and all I did was put a bit of thin oil on the motor shafts (onto the motor bushes which is what wears out when they get dry making the loud noise) inside the fans, had to pull the fan stickers off by memory, now there back to new again 😉 I used the oil I've had for years when I used to race offroad electric radio controlled cars.

It's a every run or two maintenance thing for the stock class R/C motors unless you dont want your motor to last long lol.

I think BFG's Lifetime Warranty is really that.

Unlike PNY's "Lifetime Warranty" which is defined as:
Lifetime Replacement warranty does not cover items out of production if PNY no longer stocks them. (Lifetime is defined as the lifetime of the product on the market. Outdated technology is not covered by lifetime warranty if the item is no longer available on the common market as a new product.)
Anyways, I put a Zalman HP80-C on my Ti4200 a couple of years ago and it's still going strong.

Screw using the vga silencer, just get cheap-a$$ amd reference HSF and slap that on.
