Replacing my HDD with an SSD?

Hello people,

I've recently got my self a new SSD (500Gb). And I want to replace the HDD(1Tb) with the new SSD. I got few problems. First, should I completely replace the HDD with the SSD or have HDD as as another drive for storage?

Second, I would like to reinstall windows and delete everything that I ever had on my computer. How would I delete everything, then install windows on an empty drive and how do I make sure that I install it on the SSD and not the HDD and at the same time make it bootable?

Thanks in advance. :)

Disconnect the power cable from the hard drive. Connect the SSD to the SATA port and install OS. Reconnect the power to the hard drive.

Boot to the Windows install DVD, select "Repair your computer" at the Install now setup screen, then select Command Prompt from the bottom of the menu that appears. From there select hard drive and use commands to

Delete existing partitions.

At the command prompt type the following commands in the order they appear below:

diskpart and press Enter on your keyboard

select disk 0 (where hard drive is disk 0) and press Enter on your keyboard

list partition and press Enter on your keyboard (displays list of partitions and the partition numbers)

select partition 1 and press Enter on your keyboard

delete partition and press Enter on your keyboard

select partition 2 and press Enter on your keyboard

delete partition and press Enter on your keyboard

Continue selecting partitions by number and deleting them until all partitions are deleted if that's what you want to do.

You can then remove the Windows DVD and use Disk Management to activate, assign a Drive letter, partition and format the hard drive from within Windows.

Just like above:

Disconnect the HDD
Install the SSD
Install the OS on the SSD.
Install all your drivers, and whatever software you wish.
Reconnect the HDD, and delete ALL partitions on it.

Use as desired.

would there be a problem with making the new SSD bootable? ob because its the only disk it will become bootable its self?

Installing the OS on it does that automatically.

Again, have only that drive connected when you install the OS.
You have the license key and a USB or DVD to install from, right?

I have a USB, not meant to have a problem with installing the OS

Thank you :)

I don’t know if the smart people who originally helped me out are still here, but I did exactly what you said but my installation is stuck at the windows logo, any ideas?

Hey Everybody,
I recently did this exact same thing on my HP Envy 17, I replaced the HDD with an SSD and installed a completely fresh install of windows 10.
I made this video showing the whole process, I hope this helps somebody 😀
