I have a Dell xps 630i I'm looking to upgrade my processor but note sure if I can.i don't know much about the pc but it has a intel duo core 3.0ghz,500gb hard drive and a Nvidia GeForce graphics card.its running windows 7 ultimate 64bit.i want to put a intel i7 quad-core processor in it.am I able to do that

Solution
No, as mentioned above you would need a newer generation motherboard to support the i7. For example Z170 LGA1150 supports the i7 4790k.

If you get a new motherboard chances are you would need DDR3 RAM if you dont already have it and a new Windows license.

you're thinking of the 6700k with DDR4, the 4790k needs a z97/z87 LGA1151 board and ddr3.

Indeed i am, thanks for pointing that out im always getting the Z97/Z170 mixed up :pt1cable: . But its still the Z97 LGA1150 not LGA1151 as you said...

Either way OP is going to need a new motherboard for the i7 he's thinking of.
