Specs on my Paleolithic PC:
Windows 7
6GB RAM
Radeon HD 5770
ASUS P7P55D LE
Core i5 (I can't recall model; I just remember it was the lower end of 2.xghz)
600w power supply

Worked fine for years and a few months ago, one day just wouldn't turn on. It is simply DEAD. Won't turn on even for a split-second, case fans don't turn on, CPU fans don't turn on, doesn't make any noises, etc. I am almost certain it is the motherboard because it has this little light indicator at the bottom that lights up when the power supply is on and that light no longer lights up. I have little knowledge but I know enough to be able to test the power supply with voltmeter and the power supply fan did run when I shorted out the 16 green pin and a ground black pin. Every single pin tested within voltage tolerance so I know it cannot be the power supply. At this point, would you agree with me that it is the motherboard?

If I were to buy a same-brand motherboard and chipset but of a different model, what are the chances that it will just power right up and go on as if nothing had happened? I was looking through eBay and I see there are some ASUS P7P55D-E LX and ASUS P7P55D-E Pro. If I were to install one of these into my rig, what do you think is most likely to happen if I press the power button? Is it even worth gambling $100-200 or so to buy one of these motherboards to swap?

It has been a pain lately with having three of us in this house sharing one single laptop. I wish I could just buy a new PC but at the moment I cannot afford it and I refuse to buy a big brand name pc from a big retailer. I know this PC is still repairable. Actually, I still love this pc and I could see myself still using it for a few more years. 99% of the time, I'm doing MS Word/Excel, surf internet, watching YouTube and some very light old gaming like Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Starcraft 2. I am in need of help. Thank you in advance.

A good chance it will boot into windows but may have some fault with drivers that the old board had, remove those and install the ones for that new board

I've booted windows stored on an HDD on two different machines with completely different motherboards and CPU generations (LGA 775 and 1150) and had no problems. I did not install drive, however, and windows wasn't activated at the time, so that may cause some issues.

If you swap it with exactly the same motherboard, then it will almost certainly boot up straight away. Windows may become deactivated, but if it does you can call up Microsoft, explain the situation to them and there is a high chance they will re-activate it for you, assuming you do know what your activation key is (It should be printed on a sticker that came with your copy of windows). If not, you will have to buy a windows 7 key to re-activate it.

Here is an identical replacement motherboard: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ASUS-P7P55D-LE-Socket-1156-Motherboard-BRAND-NEW-/121739216038?hash=item1c583904a6:g:JiwAAOSwd0BV2Zpj
