Hi all, I've got a barracuda 3TB ST3000DM001 1CH166- 306, Date 14214 100717520 Rev B. The drive started posting smart errors in the bios three weeks ago, i did a check disk and it took 3 hours to complete (with no errors) Unfortunately i replaced and backed up another drive by accident. So this barracuda failed and disappeared from the bios, It doesn't make any sound at all and it's not being recognised from the bios or windows . I also tried it with my usb to sata dongle in three machines but no luck at all. I took the PCB out and used an eraser too , but nothing happened. I searched a bit and found a PCB 100717520 Rev B on ebay but it requires to transfer the bios , which seems a bit tricky for a person who has never tinkered with a circuit board.
So question number 1
Should i get the pcb board and try to replace the bios by myself ? it will cost me around £50 plus i will have to buy some soldering tools . What are my chances that the drive is OK ? Any good tips of how to replace the chip?
Question number 2
Should i send the drive to a specialist data recovery person instead ? What is a good price for a service like this . I have the impression that it will be very expensive ...

Solution
replacing a PCB is a little complex for someone who has never done anything like that before. in your situation going to a data recovery place would be your best bet
