ive just removed the stock cooler on my 7800gtx, and i noticed that the substance left over on the memory was not the same as the substance left over on the core (which i can recognise as thermal grease)
Is that also a type of thermal grease? Do i remove it and just re-apply thermal grease on the core AND THE MEMORY? or do i just re-apply thermal grease on the core and just re-attach the memory braket with the substance still on it?
thanks for the answers in advance...

What aftermarket cooler are you installing? Does it include memory heatsinks (and adhesive thermal pads that attach them?

Does the stock GPU heatsink on the XFX 7800GTX sit on the memory chips, or do they have their own sink?

its the stock cooler, i just want to reattach it. Yes i think that white stuff on the memory are adhesive thermal pads like u said. THe gpu heatsink site on the memory, with the thermal pads on the memory directly.
my question is now, do i remove the thermal pads and apply thermal paste to the memory or just reattach the cooler with the old thermal pads?

It is not recommended to re-use thermal pads. The surface of the pads have been exposed to the air and have probably accumulated contaminates (hair, dust, fingerprints) that will hinder the pads' ability to create an ideal heat transfer medium. Well because thermal pads have a certain thickness, you might have a gap between the heatsink and the top of the memory chips if you try to use thermal grease. I would say try to get some replacement thermal pads and use them.

You could try to reuse the pads and just monitor the temperature, but I know that particular card has heat problems and I wouldn't want you to burn anything! Anyone else know about this?

ok im getting a new cooler soon, but for now i just need to use my computer, will it be safer to just reattach it with the old thermal pads or use the thermal paste instead, (this is just a temporary, i will be getting a new cooler in about a week)
thanks

Well if it were me I would re-attach using the old pads and monitor the performance. I also wouldn't run any games until I felt the pads were working properly. Sry I can't give you better advice but I don't own this card.

no dont worry aboout it, thanks for everything especially your quick replies 😀
ill send a reply back as soon as i have the card up and running.
thanks again!

Make sure the pads are clean, and re-use them. Pads are generally put in place because there is a gap between the cooler and the memory chip, which a liquid paste can't fill. If you do remove the pads and replace it with paste, the paste will "melt" and leave a space between the cooler and the memory chip.

ok all done , thanks for the help, ive been playing fear for about 30 min, my temps havent risen above 70 degrees yet which is great news. before it used to reach 100 degreees, lol.
thanks again, im really happy this plan of removing and installing the heatsink again worked, now i can finally play oblivion at a high resolution!!
thanks again. 😀
