Instead of attempting to clean my eight year old stock Intel fan/heat sink I'm simply going to replace it. The process is simple enough, but while refreshing my memory with videos the only ones I could find show a new installation, not replacement.

The new heat sink has the same three strips of thermal compound and I understand no additional paste is required, but do I need to clean the surface of the cpu with a product like ArctiClean? I haven't pulled it yet so I don't know what to expect once I do. Thanks.

Here is a very detailed video. same process for LGA1366, just a slightly bigger cooler. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Seu7O6IbATU

I highly doubt the thermal paste is still good on such an old heatsink even if you buy it new. 90% isopropel alochol will clean the cpu and heatsink. Small pea sized dot of thermal paste in the middle and snap down the cooler.
