Republic Commando final thoughts

rent it, and then only if you're a Star Wars fan. very linear, uninspired,
and buggy as hell. I didn't even bother with the online. the screenshots
look better than the gameplay somehow. not that the game looks "bad", but
there are many that are better. the framerate is annoyingly sluggish even
without the automatic quicksaves that interrupt the action just enough to
cause problems. the squad action is half baked, with members routinely
getting "lost", never to regroup until the next section is loaded. bacta
(health powerup) is either overly plentiful or terribly scarce, and much
time is spent at the dispensers. the enemies are monotonous and the
missions mostly tedious. Republic Commando really nailed the audio though,
from the sound effects through the theme music. in the end, if you want
sci-fi squad action, look to Brute Force, which had a better look, design,
and feel, and I'm by no means a Brute Force fan.

Here's a take from a first-person shooter fanatic:

Judging by how the version I tried on a demo disc played, I'd have to
say that I agree. RC is definitely one of those titles that you should
rent first, and see if you like it before you drop $50.00 on it.

While the demo version didn't exactly give me much more than a partial
level to play, I'd have to say that I wasn't particularly thrilled with
the AI, control response, or overall gameplay action. In other words,
yeah, you run around, give a few commands to squadmates, but "so what?"
The action feels uninspired, linear, and generally as if it had been
done hundreds of times before.

I think one word describes RC well: limited.

Personally, I would recommend Star Wars: Battlefront to people who are
looking for a good clean fun first-person shoot set in the Star Wars
universe.

I must agree. The game looks and sounds great, but the gameplay is totally
linear and BORING. Just move down a "corridor" (even outdoors!), kill some
bad guys, open a door etc. You don't even get to figure out the best way to
deploy your squad, its practically spelled out for you with all the "ghosts"
in your HUD which show where to put your guys. It's really boring. I'm
shocked at the reviews that give it a good score. I'd recommend Clone Wars
which combines ground/air combat in many different vehicles in a more fun,
less linear way. Battlefront is a hoot, but playing offline as one of many
troops gives you a feeling of being really insignificant.

I'd have to agree on all points. What a snoozer. In retrospect, even playing
the demo of this game on the KOTOR2 disc was fair enough warning. Should
have payed more attention at the time. Of course, at the time, I was still
trying to figure out where all the loose ends from THAT storyline were
ending up -- did I miss a cut-scene or twenty?

Glad I haven't dropped the cash on this one- RC is definitely at the bottom
of the list. I'd have to agree that SW:B is a much better FPS in the SW
setting.

But I think that's what makes the game fun. While the AI in SW:Bf is hardly
what anyone would call "advanced"[0], I do like the feeling of being in the
middle of a hornet's nest, with rounds flying everywhere around you. It's the
chaos and confusion of combat that makes it more exciting, IMHO.

Just my silly opinion. 🙂 Besides, I've been turned off by playing online
long ago in my PC gaming days. There's too many "k1dd1e5" out there who are
bound and determined to show the world how many swear words they know, and
how often they can denigrate the other denizens of would-be decent servers.
Unfortunately, online gaming's popularity has brought about its ruin, IMHO.

[0] In fact, the fact that the AI is rather "dense" makes the game incredibly
humorous at times. 🙂

It's a different experience than you usually get in that you're more a cog
in the wheel. Not that its bad, it's just different. Probably what it really
feels like to be a lowly storm trooper. Anyway its way more fun that RC!!
