Here's my must have's.

  • 144hz
    1ms response
    freesync/gsync

Here's some preferables.

1440p+
under $700ish, less the better really, I can't afford to spend more than $300 but I am. =p

I'm thinking hypothetically, this should last me a good 5-6 years at least, perhaps longer, as a really solid workhorse monitor, which will serve me well for my forthcoming GPU upgrade, and a build past that, with good qualities for high end gaming, until 4k+ IPS or whatever the new hotness is monitors with good gaming specs are a thing and I can drop some serious cash on a serious high end one.

What you reckon guys? What's worth a buy? Wanted to ask some experts to make sure I didn't burn a substantial bundle of money on something that wasn't the ideal solution.

Cheers.

Those complaining about ghosting is on IPS panels due to they all are 4ms or higher. I suggest a 1~2ms (GTG). In the old days ghosting begain at 6ms(BTB) which is a harder test for monitors. The GTG is easier thus I suggest nothing 4ms or above. Here is a gsync TN panel BenQ 27 inch 1ms 1440 144hz for 583.

1440p and 144Hz is the true sweet spot in gaming right now, as 1440p isn't as demanding as 4k and have a great look. No single GPU nowadays can handle 4k properly with 60 fps and maxed-out settings, so until the release some awesome GPU to handle that, your 1440p 144Hz monitor will be the best option.

But talking about which monitor,
What's your GPU?
NVIDIA or AMD, that way we'll be able to decide on G-Sync or FreeSync.

Nvidia 770 GTX, planning an upgrade to a 10 series nvidia card in the next few months though. Thinking maybe even a 1080ti or something.

I'm an Australian though dude, once I include the exchange rate and delivery on that very same ROG Swift it's $1,216.47 for me. =S

Even on the Australian retailer that monitor is $959, plus I'd estimate about $40 shipping.

The second one actually seems feasible though. All up including shipping that equaled $594.90, compared to the $715 for the one I was looking at, assuming that price includes the %10 Goods and Services tax it seems a good deal. Saves me a hundred odd bucks, probably $40 odd if it does not, now I gotta do a side by side and really compare em.

The one you suggested seems to have a better contrast ratio:

ACM 100,000,000:1 (1000:1)
Whereas the AOC is 50m:1 and 1000:1

The stand seems more adjustable on the AOC (Which I'm not really fussed about)

The Acer has Freesync and the AOC has Gsync (is there a difference? which ones better?)

Acer has a slightly smaller border around the outside of it which will make getting a second/third monitor better?

Apart from that I can't really tell the difference between them. Just hope the Acer is still on sale by the time I can get some extra money on me card to pay for it.

Ahh geez. Most of the monitors I was looking at were freesync. Gonna have to start looking again and restrict it to gsync. Also read apparently gsync have a hardware thing that does it, but freesync relies on software, which is why gsync costs more, but apparently some people complain of ghosting or something with freesync so ah heck it, i dont mind paying for guaranteed quality.

Also realized. black fridays about a month and a half away. gonna stick as much cash away as I can, go hard on black friday amazon deals or whatever, if I can stick enough away, might even be able to score a GPU too. =D
