So, I was messing around with my computer and decided 'Hey! Why don't I go ahead and reseat my memory and clear the CMOS for no reason?'... so I did. Now, when I try to power up my computer won't show me anything. I'm thinking maybe clearing the CMOS may have changed my default display output? But don't currently have a VGA to check. Any ideas of what else it could be? I was going to search the MOBO, but I'm having a hard time finding what model it is.

What ideas do you guys have?

did you put the battery in making sure it is in securely? Try unplugging the display cable and plugging it back in, also using a different output on the graphics card if you have other cable and your monitor can accept a different input like HDMI, DVI, VGA.

Can you provide the no. of RAM modules you have? For two or more you can try removing cmos and all the available memory, Then cut off the power for few minutes. Now start the power supply and try installing ram in single slot and check. If it works, then try installing second and try and so on. Lastly try your CMOS cell.

If it works you are on to go. If it works but display fails after installing cmos cell try installing the new cmos cell. If everything display fails at first very step than also try further.

During installation and removing process, it possible that by mistake you have damaged something including RAM module.

nigeln: The battery is in securely. And I will have to search down a VGA cable to see if I can get it to display from another output.

atulmaniya: I have 4 Modules, totaling 8GBs. I tried inserting 1 module at a time, and rebooting the computer, but nothing showed up. I will run through your steps and see if that'll give me a different outcome.

Ran through the thread, and tried a couple of things some of the guys said. Left the CMOS battery out for over 5 minutes. The battery isn't bad, and my RAM isn't bad. It was working right before I took all of it out, and put it back in. I'm leaning towards it could be defaulted back to VGA output, not the DVI that I am currently using. I will track down a cord and see if I can get it to work. I've never had this problem before, I've cleared the CMOS and reseated RAM before on different rigs and never ran into this problem.

Thanks for the help so far.

Resetting the CMOS will make the BIOS reset to the default settings so that could very well be the case as you will have to change the display setting in the BIOS to the proper PCIE setting.

The OE graphics card that came with the computer was a PCI-E and had a VGA output as default. So it most likely reverted back to the VGA default output, and my current GPU doesn't have VGA, just 2 DVI's. So I must hunt down a card with VGA, or a VGA cable and find my VGA/DVI adapter.

nigeln, thanks for the help and replies. I took the RAM out, and used compressed air to clean the slots out. Still nothing. My motherboard has on-board video, and I'm willing to bet it may have reverted back to that as default, even thought I have an nVidia PCI-E card installed on it. I will be hunting down a VGA cable to test my theory today and see how the outcome is.

My theory was correct. Clearing the CMOS battery reverted everything back to default (of course) but also meant the on-board display was also enabled, which has NEVER been used by me, or the previous owner of the computer. Kind of a headache, but I got the VGA cable plugged in, and pulled my PCI-E card out, and the monitor took right away. After if full booted, I restarted and went into the BIOS and set the default display to PCI-E instead of on-board video.

Thanks for all the help guys.
