This has been bugging me for a while I was wondering if 2 panels had the same PPI but different resolutions would the one with the higher resolution still look better or not?
With high res textures or video, a higher res screen won't be scaling them as much so you could see more detail. So yes with the same ppi, the higher res will look better.
No, it wouldn't. How sharp a display looks is determined by the PPI. a A 100" 1080p screen will look worse than a 10" 720p screen. On top of that, higher resolutions are more GPU intensive.
Let's look at Mr K's examples: 100", 1080p monitor = 22ppi; 10" 720p monitor = 146ppi; so yes the 10" will look crazy sharp compared to the 100" monitor.
But that wasn't really the question.
Let's look at a 24" 1080p monitor (92ppi) versus a 16" 720p monitor (also 92ppi) - same ppi, different resolutions, which do you think would look better?

Woops yeah, 1080p one would look better as there's more pixels overall.
