I'm looking at a Samsung monitor, the CHG90. It has a resolution of 3840 x 1080, my current monitor runs at 3440 X 1440 and that is the highest resolution offered by all the games and programs I use, there has never been an option for 3840 x 1080. Is this resolution option set by my Windows operating system or is it set by the programs themselves? Also, is a 1440 display better than a 1080 resolution display?

Solution
3840x1080 is essentially two 1920x1080 panels slapped together. At 49" your pixel density is only going to be: 81.4 PPI. Below 100 is where you really start being able to see individual pixels.

3440x1440 at 34" is about 110 PPI.

Basic rule of thumb is 24" 16:9 is as large as you want to go with 1080p. 27" and up to about 32" with 1440p. For 34-37" 16:9 2160p.

Now 3440x1440 at 34" is the equivalent of a wide 27"

49" is equivalent to two 27" 1080p panels slapped together.

Performance wise, the 3840x1080 panel is less pixels to drive, 4million vs the 5million of 3440x1440.

I would only look at 5120x1440 for a 49" panel, which I don't think exists yet.

Solution
Might be a while. ASUS took nearly two years from announcement to get their 4K 120hz panel on the market. Just based on the specs you can assume it will use the G-sync HDR module for the G-sync panel. Probably can expect that to be around $2000 or more at launch.
