Hey all,
Before we get going, my build:
  • i7 7700k -- cooled w/ Corsair H55 AiO
  • GA-Z270x-Gaming 9 (Gigabyte) -- BIOS v. F9b
  • Intel 660p Series M.2 2280 1TB
  • XPG 16Gb (8x2) DDR4 3000mH
  • EVGA 2070 Super XC Ultra
  • EVGA 850W G2 Gold PSU
  • Windows 10 Home
2 days ago, after a fresh boot in afternoon, I went almost immediately into a game (EFT) and started playing. About 5 min after booting and being in game, my PC crashed and automatically restarted. I loaded into windows, immediately went back into game and boom, crash again.

This was followed by trying to get a diagnosis of the issue, but I wasn't receiving any BSOD at the time. I did a system restore to a point on June 10th (restore point created for windows update.) After the restore the same issue persisted. I would boot windows, 3-5 minutes later crash, reboot, etc.

Now this may or may not be the original cause of the issue, but I believe that on June 8th a power surge hit my house. My power went off and on rapidly. I do have my PC plugged into a powerstrip with a surge protector, and after this event everything seemed to be functioning fine... Until 2 days ago.

I followed some steps to turn "Automatic Restart on System Failure" off, and what followed was a system freeze. The PC stayed running, but my desktop was frozen. I got frustrated and gave up for the night. This morning, I went to boot up and got the BSOD with Stop Code: CRITICAL PROCESS DIED. <Mod Edit>

I went down to Micro Center and purchased a Asus Strix 550W PSU (I know this is not enough power for my system, but MC is basically sold out of PSU due to supply issues and I only bought it for diagnosing if my PSU was the culprit.) came home and plugged it in. When I booted, the GPU fans went on and off a few times, then the screen told me to plug in the PCI-e cables (they were plugged in and tight) and then I turned off the machine. To my horror, I noticed a stream of smoke emitting from somewhere on the mobo, but it came and went so fast I couldn't tell where it originated from.

Now I am scared to try anything else. What should my next steps be?

TL;DR: PC started restarting after 3-5 min of being on. Culprit could be a surge that hit my house 2 day before problems started. 2 days after issues started I got BSOD "Stop Code: CRITICAL PROCESS DIED" and cant boot into Windows. I replaced PSU with 550w for testing and got small amount of smoke on boot, but couldn't place where it came from. Wondering what to do next.

It's also probably important to note that my PC is extremely clean. Hardly any dust accumulation before problems started.
