Question Restarts whilst gaming (NOT OVERHEATING)

Windows 10
Z87-G55 gaming mobo
XFX Pro 650w gaming psu
Intel core i5 4670K (non overclocked)
MSI Nvidia GTX 760 OC edition
Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3 RAM memory
Crucial 500GB SSD

My system is nearly 6 years old, built in November 2013. Originally, I thought it was an overheating issue.

So I disassembled the PSU, CPU cooler and graphics card.

I set about removing all the dust that had collected over nearly six years of gaming and general use.

Where the CPU and GPU were concerned, I also reapplied a fresh layer of thermal grease and according to GPUZ, temps are nominal.

I have also alt tabbed out of games to get a live reading whilst gaming and the CPU and GPU temp are within normal range.

Airflow through the case is good, with 1 intake fan up front and 3 exhaust fans.

From reading a few threads on Google, it would appear the PSU is at fault, which would surprise me, because XFX are supposed to be the enthusiast's choice.

So before I go ahead and replace a potentially perfectly good PSU, does anyone have any other suggestions on here.

Edit:

Right, just tried without the surge protector. Restarted after just 10 minutes of Metro 2033 Redux, so that rules that out. Looks like it might be the PSU. Any tips to get a bit more out of this one?

That's the last time I'm buying XFX, they don't even seem to have a presence in this country anymore when I looked up about warranties.

I'm plumbing for a Seasonic this time, according to the likes of Tom's hardware forums, they are the best.

Edit: This is a review on my exact PSU, it was well regarded at the time, that's why I chose it

...

Edit 2: I also never had these crashes on Windows 7, they've only been since I've upgraded to Windows 10.

Also I tried to play Metro again, this time it just crashed at the intro screen, before the GPU even had a chance to heat up...

Try checking the windows reliability history, just search 'reliability' in the windows search bar. If it's a windows crash/error, it should show up there.

could be the psu, 6 years is a long time, even for a xfx rebadged seasonic. Seasonic is great, just don't get the s12II/m12II or other similar ones.

It's not a Window's crash error, the system shuts down as if there was a powercut. No time for Windows to do anything. The event viewer logs a generic "error 41-sudden power loss".

I am getting this model Seasonic as a replacement for the crappy XFX

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Seasonic-S12II-520-Bronze-Silent-520W-Power-Supply-80-Plus-Bronze/113227394529?_trkparms=aid=555018&algo=PL.SIM&ao=1&asc=60041&meid=ecd1406c921e4c1ba2d82a59041a33c3&pid=100005&rk=1&rkt=12&mehot=ag&sd=133067582363&itm=113227394529&pmt=1&noa=0&pg=2047675&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851

I don't need it to set the world alight, just provide reliable, stable power.

I had the 620 version of that model, it failed 4 times before I stopped rma-ing it because payment for shipping wasn't worth it. But that's only me experience. You might get lucky, but if you could swing for a corsair tx, heck even the cx550m, I would.

Are you seriously recommending a Corsair over a Seasonic? Seasonic are frequently heralded as THE BEST. Not one of the best, but THE BEST.

I've read on this very website that Corsair are a cheap brand which are best avoided, now I've got a guy recommending Corsair to me.

Could this get anymore confusing? You couldn't make this up, that's for sure!

Also can someone explain to me how I've just spend one and a half hours playing DEUS EX HUMAN REVOLUTION without a single restart event?

Yet earlier trying to play Metro 2033 Redux edition I was managing between 10 and 30 minutes before it just cut all power to my whole rig.

Seasonic prime/focus are one of the best, sure, s12II/m12II are 10 year old designs that are group regulated and are generally inferior to modern psu's. The corsair cxm(2017 grey label) is not what I recommend, but it's a newer dc to dc design and would be marginally better then the m12/s12. A corsair tx is more suitable though.

Perhaps give it a read.

That's just leading me further down the rabbit hole and raises more questions than it answers, like a lot of nerd advice.

I've been told Seasonic is THE BEST so I am going with seasonic, okay?

Edit: What do you think about this Corsair

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CORSAIR-TX650M-Semi-Modular-ATX-PSU-650-W/123816943496?epid=25032252040&hash=item1cd4109f88:g:AGQAAOSwJO9dFNY9

I still can't believe I'm being LEAD AWAY from Seasonic, on the very forum that recommends Seasonsic!

Also, how was I able to play Deus Ex: Human Revolution for 1:30h last night without it restarting my system once!?

Edit: Also, possibly related, as I switched my machine on this morning the GPU fan suddenly went crazy and then calmed down after a minute. Possibly related if the PSU is supplying too much power?

Edit: Also, possibly related, as I switched my machine on this morning the GPU fan suddenly went crazy and then calmed down after a minute. Possibly related if the PSU is supplying too much power?
No, not likely. Probably just a windows driver loading problem. Could try a reinstall with DDU.

From what I recall, Deus ex is more cpu bound and stresses the gpu less then metro. So it could be that the psu simply can't power the gpu at full load or is overheating at load. Stressing the gpu with another gpu intensive game or benchmark like furmark or so may recreate the issue, might be tad dangerous as if it is the psu, continuing testing may damage the rest of the system.

I was playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution and the fan kept going crazy.

I alt tabbed out of the game and the temperature of the GPU was nominal.

Okay, my GPU fan is revving above idle now I've just got Opera open. Now it's gone back to idle.

Driver is up to date.

Could the psu be a false flag?

Hey I've had issues with my computer restarting randomly only when gaming, which on my other thread has been narrowed to the psu.

But I am starting to question that, because recently the fan on my MSI Nvidia GTX 760 OC edition has been randomly spiking up, sometimes when gaming, sometimes when I'm only on the desktop.

I've recently updated the driver, could that be the cause.

Hello my fellow enthusiasts, it's me again.

As some of you may know from my other thread, I am trying to diagnose a faulty power supply.

I've downloaded a program called HWinfo to monitor the voltage of my CPU and GPU.

I ran a test where I loaded up a game then minimised it so that I could look at the vcore voltage and GPU voltage.

For the purposes of this test I'll assume vcore refers to the general CPU voltage including all of the cores.

Anyway, I noted that the graph for the GPU was fairly consistent, whereas the graph for the CPU vcore voltage was quite jagged.

I know a CPU has intelligent power supply usage, but shouldn't the voltage be stable? The game was just on the title screen and minimised.

Obvious problem or simply the power management doing it's thing?

Edit:

Also, according to this thread https://www.lifewire.com/power-supply-voltage-tolerances-2624583

My stats should be as follows

PSU Tolerance Table
Voltage RailToleranceMinimum VoltageMaximum Voltage
+3.3VDC± 5%+3.135 VDC+3.465 VDC
+5VDC± 5%+4.750 VDC+5.250 VDC
+5VSB± 5%+4.750 VDC+5.250 VDC
-5VDC (if used)± 10%-4.500 VDC-5.500 VDC
+12VDC± 5%+11.400 VDC+12.600 VDC
-12VDC± 10%-10.800 VDC- 13.200 VDC

+3.3VDC Current: 3.392v Min: 3.360v max: 3.392 Avg: 3.381v

Sorry I gotta go to bed, this takes too long to read the numbers and then type out, but you get the idea.
