If I restore my laptop and select "keep my files" will it restore the system services to default settings? Somehow my spme of my laptop services properties regarding when they start (automatic, delayed, manual, disabled) were changed and a virus got in and disabled Defender for all user groups. I need to default all services because I have no clue what some of them are and it's affecting driver, software, hardware, etc. udates and error notifications.

PLEASE HELP!

Did you try a new user?

I am not sure the reset would work as it may keep registry settings when you keep files/settings. I would suggest copying everything you want to save off PC and do a fresh install. Especially after a virus as you don't know if its all gone for sure.

You can download the Windows 10 media creation tool and use it to make a win 10 installer on USB

if you can't copy anything off laptop, try http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/

once everything backed, change boot order in bios so it has USB first, hdd second
boot from installer and follow this: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1950-windows-10-clean-install.html

It was so strange, all of the tools, update applications, diagnostic tools, and maintenance routine apps were all disabled. So I got ZERO notifications on Windows updates, Java updates, other SW updates (adobe), drivers update, and device recognition, or backups reminders. It was like everything that was as used to maintain and keep the system updated were all cut off. Even a command to disable Defender was entered in to the user registry for groups and I had to change the service to enable Defender. I just want everything in the services registry change back to default no matter what it is. Because whatever all was changed it would not let me download or install a critical BIOS update from HP.

I have created a backup, a system image, and even file history. I have backed up my professional tax prep software. All I want is a solid copy of Windows 10, that works and all the tools and utilities work and it can update without errors or shutting down, etc. I had over 200GB of data and files and it's taken most of the day to make sure everything is saved... I'm gonna start restoring soon... Wish me luck!

i would make a new USB on the media creation tool and use it, A cause its clean and B cause its the latest version of win 10 and will require less patching

the reset may just recreate the problem again if the image is defective.

Absolutely. I want to do this once, do it right, and then never have to again.
