I had to replace the hard drive on a Toshiba Satellite A505 Laptop. No problem, I created the restore CD's from my Toshiba laptop when it was new. To minimize any problems, I purchased a Toshiba L200 Hard Drive to replace the Toshiba HDD2H21 that failed. Using my created CD's, I went through the restore process. I was never prompted for disks 4 or 5 but the computer displayed the message "restore was successful". Now for the problems:

1. Both the wired and wireless NICs say the driver is not digitally signed. By using the option under F8 to disable the signature checking, I was able to get on the internet and at least get the wired NIC working but not the wireless or any of the Ricoh components. I have tried to download the latest drivers from the Toshiba website but no luck.

2. I cannot get any windows updates to run, not individually, not using troubleshooting, nothing. I keep getting an error message that "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I have restarted my computer, multiple times. When I go into services, it does show that both BITS and Windows Update are running. I have deleted the 'Software Distribution' folder and still nothing works.

I even tried to call Toshiba. I know the computer is out of warranty but the hard drive isn't :). They weren't buying that and they want to sell my a one time advanced service for $99. I refuse to pay that. They told me the drivers had to be installed individually but the created recovery CD's do not allow that option. I DID order their recovery CD's for $29.99 but I won't receive them for 7-10 business days.

Is there something else I can try? I appreciate any advice you can give me.

Thank you!

Regarding Windows Updates, I am going through the same problem. There are other non-obvious avenues to check. Here are some hints. No, I've not solved the problems myself (yet), but maybe this information will help you. Good luck!
In the article www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/498508/e-unexpected-0x8000ffff-and-0x8000247-errors/, you can look at the whole thread, but especially check out where the text "fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo c:" is. [<sigh>, forum shortened the url, last part is "...forums/t/498508/e-unexpected-0x8000ffff-and-0x8000247-errors"].
The Microsoft information on this is at support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/982018/an-update-that-improves-the-compatibility-of-windows-7-and-windows-server-2008-r2-with-advanced-format-disks-is-available
Multiple forums (e.g., answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/windows-update-cannot-currently-check-for-updates/3e0b0a1c-4de0-4dd5-9cc2-c6e672f0bed4) thought that the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers can be a problem.

The main issue is, of course, how can you apply any updates (even off-line) when the system doesn't want to update to begin with? That's the issue I'm fighting right now.
