Resume from Standby Problem

I have a brand new PC that has been working just fine in terms of the
subject problem until last week. As far as I can tell the only things
that changed were a BIOS update from the manufacturers update program, a
driver update for the ATI RADEON X600 card also from the manufacturer, and I
installed more DRAM an IEEE-1394 PCI adapter. The latter uses the built-in
MS driver in XP.

Now the system will not resume from standby if more than 30 minutes have
passed. Less than this and resume works just fine. More than 30 minutes
and the screen stays blank, external USB devices never get power but the fan
comes on and the DVD drive becomes active. Bizarre. Hibernate works just
fine.

I have manually backed off the BIOS update, the ATI driver update and
disabled the firewire card. Still no joy.

Any ideas?

Machine is running Windows XP Home SP2 will all updates applied from Windows
Update prior to this problem. Has an Intel P4 HT 3.6Ghtz CPU, 1.5GB of DDR2
533Mhtz DRAM.

BIOS update: check BIOS setup for appropriate settings that might have
defaulted with the update. RAM module: run memtest86 to verify RAM.
What if anything is in Event View logs?

Restored previous BIOS backup and settings, not a problem. No problems with
RAM testing. Nothing in event logs.

Restore works from S1 power state. Works from hibernate. Has stopped
working from S3 state only. Have also restored a restore point from when
the system worked just fine, still no joy.

Ok, you may want to consider updating both your video card drivers back
to the latest version on ATi's Website (4.11 as of right now) and you
may need to update your chipset (motherboard) drivers as that is what is
going to control your suspend functions.

I would check your settings under Power Options in the Control Panel.
If you are having the computer move from Standby to Hibernation after 30
minutes or something like that, it may just be hanging from that. These
are just a few thoughts and may or may not help the situation 😉

Oh, forgot to mention. S1 is Standby and S3 is Hibernation 😉
