retailers do they resell RMA as new?

So today I got my new asus Z87 board from amazon (uk) except one problem, it isnt new.

Luckily I decided to unpackage the delivery box (even tho cant build rig today as not all parts here) and by luck I noticed the motherboard box had no seal, and was worn on the part that is opened. I opened the box and the manual was very badly creased in the corner. So clearly not new either.

Examined the board which does look ok, no bent pins etc. that are visible however the sticker over the cpu socket was half peeled off which suggests it was previously removed and then stuck back on later.

Of course I have arranged a replacement and thankfully amazon ship replacements next day not needing to wait for the return but this I found concerning as I basically have a used product sold as new.

Is this practice common?

A common trait among businesses and I suppose people really is that they will attempt almost anything for personal/financial gain if they feel they can get by with it.

That said I wouldn't be surprised at all if vendors try to pass off returns or open box items as new items.

It is more of a blackhat trait of businesses that you should watch out for; it is great that Amazon is very good with refunds/replacements. I personally think it was a mistake though as ASUS has ALWAYS been good for me.

Well I cant believe it, replacement is pre opened also.

Again no seal, the 2 tabs of the box already open so the order picker would surely notice this, cardboard on inside of box squashed as if it was forced shut, and the sticker on the cpu cover is not lined up.

Seems RMA's with motherboard's is rife and getting bad taste in mouth from amazon reselling them as new.

Amazon direct, I avoid 3rd party sellers.

Are what I described normal and I am been paranoid, or does it sound ex RMA from my description?

1st box

Box wasnt sealed not even with tape.
Outside of box at bottom of flap looked worn as if it was opened before.
Anti static bag unsealed
Sticker on cpu cover was partially not stuck on.
Manual inside box was folded over in the cornet about 2/3 way through. (this is the one I cant get over)
All accessories still in sealed bags, board on examination looks fine and no marks on it.

2nd box

The 2 side flaps of box were already sticking out. So would be immediatly obvious to order picker. (this very hard to ignore)
When I lifted lid of box the inside part of right side of box was very creased as if ti wasnt shut properly and forced down.
Anti static bag for motherboard looks all messy and creased etc. as if board had been previously taken out and put back in. This board I havent examined closely still in unsealed bag.
Sticker on cpu cover is not lined up sort of slightly diagonal.
Front cover of manual creased at top but all pages and back cover look ok.
All accessories sealed bags

Very odd.

Send it back and purchase from a different place.

Ebuyer,Dabs or Scan are all nice.

Check out the product on PCpartpicker for alternate retailers or you can post which mobo it is and I'll help you out.

ok So I shouldnt chance one of them and try to assemble, to you seems weird also?

Its a asus z87-plus.

I admit I have now googled and apparently unsealed boxes is the norm, but the boxes been damaged inside as well as the state of the first manual and 2nd board bag seem bizarre for something thats supposed to be unopened.

Very odd.

Here's some alternatives you could go for:

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-z87a - Similar board but a bit cheaper

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-z87plus - Same board but more costly elsewhere

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-gryphonz87 - Similar board a tiny bit cheaper

Gigabyte alternative: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-motherboard-gaz87xd3h - Never had a problem with gigabyte boards being opened etc it may be the seller of the boards though not manufacturer.

Well I installed the 2nd board (cant really touch 1st board now as RMA is active). The plan was to do a quick setup in under hour to see if posts and if it doesnt I would have time to get order in on scan/ebuyer for next day, but the arctic i30 cooler is a nightmare to install (at least for me), its different design to the one on this and other review sites seems an updated design with a harder install procedure, I did eventually get it in place but without one of the spacers it fell out of place, I wasnt going to remove the heatsink after I put on the MX4 to replace the spacer. Thankfully it has posted first time, temps seem fine (idling at 22C) so currently is no obvious problems with the board.

Looking at the boxes again the condition would make sense if for any reason amazon had a reason to open these boxes, for all I know they keep them empty then fill them on new orders or something, it would also make sense if the order picker picked up the box holding it at the front only expecting it to be sealed and it wasnt bam everything falls on the floor and he shoves it all back inside (but if that happened would I want to be using a board that fell on the floor).

The first box I probably over exaggerated the manual, whilst it does have a fold its actually not that big and is defenitly the better condition one overall the box damage is minor just was a shock to me as I expect brand new things to not have damage, static bag was right shape as well. But I cant swap the boards as then the serial number wont match on the return item.

Given it posts would you still RMA it and buy another from another retailer?

amazon refunded me 50% after I sent them pic and said they will honour full warranty. So I accepted that deal, sending other board back tommorow when I pick up another parcel from them. They even got someone to check some boxes in warehouse and apparently every one they checked had no seals on either box or bag. I dont know how many they checked, but was taken off the website for a few hours.

well this has came back to bite me and I was too stupid to not check all the dimm slots right away.
I had a BSOD 2 days ago which I assumed was gpu related as I had just upgraded the GPU and changed GPU drivers but then decided to check the ram as the error message on the BSOD seemed ram related "write to read only memory"

Using online memtest (imo better than memtest86) I very quickly early in the test started seeing memory errors, I repeated the test in the following ways.

Increased cpu vcore
reduced dram speed to 1333
reduced cpu to stock everything
increased voltage to IMC

all 4 failed to stop the errors.

I then proceeded to remove 2 of the memory sticks and retested (everything on stock including IMC voltage). No errors.
Now tested the other 2 in the same 2 dimm slots as the first 2 and no errors.

I am about to test now using the other 2 dimm slots.

Googling seems to suggest dodgy ram slots are widespread, this probably ties in with the rumoured high rates of RMA's and asus/retailers working together to hide RMA's?

Of course this is a bit worse than simply returning a board, I have to dissemble a rig, including removing a cooler that was a pain in the backside to install, that cooler designed for a one time install as it uses adhesives as well.

I will post back if I get the expected results, I am aware its possible the other 2 will test ok and its an issue only when all 4 are used combined.

errors using the other 2 dimm slots. 🙁

so I guess this is a slam dunk motherboard fault?

either I put up with using 2 slots only which would mean if I want 16 gig of ram buying 2 new 8 gig modules. ram prices currently high.

or do a return with amazon again (I fear they will ban me given my returns lately, as I also returned a gtx 760 when I was unhappy with stock cooler performance) which means disassembling this machine, the cooler was a pain to install.
