Of course if you don't believe me or the gentlemen you are hotly
debating, I can cite information for you
Mayo Clinic
You should have
(or should have had)... Prostate Exam
There's no consensus about the best screening age. Mayo Clinic doctors
recommend that men over age 50 should check with their physician about
having a digital rectal exam and prostate- specific antigen (PSA) blood
test every year. Black men or men who have a family history of prostate
cancer should consider starting the tests at age 40.
or
community health database
Among men, the lifetime probability of developing prostate cancer is one
in six. Therefore, doctors recommend that men ages 50 and older receive
a yearly prostate exam. Additionally, both men and women ages 50 and
older are advised to receive a blood stool test once every two years and
a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy once every five years to detect
colorectal cancer.
and if that isn't enough how about the American College of Preventive
Medicine (taken from WebMD)
Prostate exam: There is much disagreement among different organizations
about the benefits of testing for early prostate cancer. This stems from
the fact that studies have not been able to conclusively prove -- in the
minds of some experts -- that finding prostate cancer early can help
save a man's life. For instance, the American College of Preventive
Medicine recommends against routine screening with either the digital
rectal exam (DRE) -- where the doctor exams the prostate through a
rectal exam -- or the PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood test. The
ACPM says that men should be armed with information about prostate
cancer testing and make an individual decision with the help of their
doctor. However, the American Cancer Society says that men age 50 or
older with a life expectancy of greater than 10 years should be offered
both the PSA blood test and the rectal exam. If you're at high risk for
prostate cancer -- black men and men with a family history of prostate
cancer -- it's a good idea to begin screening at age 45, they say.
