Hi

Running windows XP and it crashed - wouldnt start up in safe mode etc.

Using unbutu running from a cd i could see all files - but couldnt start under winfdows.

Tried rebooting from an XP cd - but couldnt restart pc, tried installing xp again - but during the os installation I accepted formatting the main hard drive.

Stopped this and now cant see the original data files using unbutu.

Feel the data is still there - Can use unbutu to start up the pc from a cd -

What would be the best way to recover the data files - the pc is old so my main interest is recovering my data, I have majority of it backed up - but unfortunately there are some critical items that arent. Should know better .

Any help is gratefully recieved.

Try a recovery utility such as r-studio or r-undelete (r-tt.com) As long as you didn't write to the drive, you probably just blew awy the file table with the format and can still read the majority of the data if you do a raw scan.

Hi,
first of all, you stop rebooting from an XP cd because you may lose your data permanently. I will suggest you to use the data recovery tool to recover formatted files, which is available on http://www.recoverformatted.com/files/. Even, i was having the same problem and used this tool and got back my deleted/lost data. You can download its demo version from http://www.recoverformatted.com/download/recoverformatted-windows.exe and check the results.
