Retrieving data after downloading install disk

Given inappropriate and incomplete info by Apple tech, used installation disk #1 on IMac. We do not currently have disk #2, so unable to complete operation. Cannot get out of install mode as computer requests disk #2.

Is it possible to recover data at this point?

Whatever data wasnt over written by the files from Disk #1 is still there, still recoverable. There are plenty of free apps that will recover this data for you, but I am not an apple guy, I don't know what's free and works for a mac. For PC i would recommend Pandora Recovery or Odin. If you have a working PC laying around, you can take the hard drive out of the apple and put it into the PC and use one of the aforementioned apps to recover the data

(you'r PC wont care this disk came from an apple, and neither will recovery software)
