Hello,
My company is going to scrap this item. I wanted to take the hard disk inside and put in my PC or become portable hardisk. It has about 4-5 500GB hard disk. Is the process pretty straight forward to wipe clean and create new partitions? Or i need some hardware to do it first?

If the question has been asked before, please point me to the thread. Thanks

It depends on your company policy and if there is any sensitive data on the disks.

Are they happy for you to just reformat/repartition, or do they need to be actively scrubbed. (written with random bits a number of times.)

If its just repartition, then windows has the "diskpart" command and linux has "gparted".

If you need to do an active disk scrub in linux (gparted) you can select the disk and issue the "clean all" command. this will write zeros to every sector.

Another option is the windows format command with the "/P" option.

Note that this makes it more difficult (but not impossible) to recover data (think national intelligence agency type resources).

If this is not good enough then look at something from here.

Technically it is easy, it just depends on company policy about data security.
