I wanted to see if I could get a Tobii board taken from an Alienware laptop to work with my desktop.

I soldered the correct wires to the USB cable, and plugged it in, but all I got was a spark and a bit of smoke. After redoing the solder points I tried again. This time my system picked up something, as there was a micro stutter that happens just like my other USB devices when plugged in. Unfortunately, I couldn't find it anywhere in the device manager nor the Tobii software. On top of the spark/smoke, my keyboard turns off when it's plugged in.

Nothing appears to be damaged, but I am wondering if anyone could share some insight on what could be going on, and why it is not working. I don't care too much if anything is damaged, but I'm curious if there is any risk of harm to my system.

I got the idea from an instructable on reusing other laptop cameras. Greatly appreciate any help or tips in advance! Nothing urgent or anything, just a fun project.

Well I would say that if you soldering the wires correctly and got smoke, that you didn't solder them correctly. Smoke does not correlate to correctness.
Thanks for the reply,
You're right, I should have said what I thought was correct. I determined them with a multimeter, but there could be many points of error.
