reversed sata drive

will reversing a flat (S.I.L) ribbon connection damage the hdd or motherboard supply? Toshiba MK6028GAL 60GB HDD on Toshiba Siemens Netbook. Neighbour gave this to me to check why it was not displaying. Found HDD extremely hot, pin 1 hdd via belt to (44?) of M/B. Swapped to match 1-1 but now no Power/HDD LED's or HDD, no more HDD whirring. Kentucky Fried Netbook?

Or fried disk. How'd it get reversed, anyway?

Can you test the disk in a different machine, like attaching it to a desktop mobo or an IDE to USB adapter?
Can you boot the machine as far as BIOS?
