Sup all, i have a almost 4 year old graphics card now, it was a pretty decent one when i bought it.
it's a gigabyte HD 6950, it has 3 fans on it, and now 1 is fully siezed up, and one spins a little when it's under demand
one seems fully functional
i have been debating wether i should get a new card, but right now it seems unnecessary, it runs all the games i want to well, the only problem is that it will sometimes overheat and freeze for a moment

is there any way i can revive the dead fans?
i have maybe 5 months ago taken it apart, air dusted it, and sprayed one of the fans with a silicon based lubricant (maybe not the best?) didnt really help at that point

i also purchased a replacement fan which doesnt seem to have the right cords into it.

anyway, can i revive these old fans? another option i guess would be to get some sort of stand alone water cooling, since i think mounting is pretty well covered for any cards right?

what do u guys think?

Solution

I would remove the shroud (leave the heatsink on). Strap 3x new 92mm fans on there.

ok guys, here's what i ended up doing..
i took the thing apart, took the fans out, and squirted some singer oil into them, it also turns out that the replacement fan i bought a year ago has infact got the right connectors, so i replaced one of the fans with that, and lubed the other broken one... the replacement seems like it wasnt necessary as the siezed fan i lubed up is working well now

it took a little while after reassembling them and running the fans before it was 100% again, so i guess it took a little while to work its way in

also damric, buying new fans, modifying the card... not really a reasonable solution i think, especially when a $2 thign of oil fixed the problem, thanks anyway

Some people have them laying around, heh. Good on you for fixing them though.
