[RGMW] My latest crazy idea

Well, much to my surprise the Tale of RGMW Gamers has caught on with
quite a few people. A number of them, most recently Ken Coble, have
even started building their armies for real (or expanding ones they
already have). This has given me another idea: with enough pictures of
models converted for the Tale (I'm seriously thinking about buying at
least some of my first month's planned DE and then converting Kourzan
and Melkhen) and maybe the odd painted unit (Xis says that his Necrons
are coming along paintwise), what would people say to the idea of
submitting a White Dwarf hobby article about the Tale? Anyone who's
interested and has bought/converted some models for their chosen army
could write up a short synopsis for their army and maybe details of
conversions they have photos for. Obviously, before anyone goes into a
conversion/painting frenzy or starts sending photos I'd have to float
the idea with Guy Haley, but a lot of people seem to be putting effort
into this project both with their suggested purchases and in some
cases actual purchases, and it might be worth a shot to try getting
some of the results in print.

Let me know what people think.

Its a million to one chance but it might just work.

Mine are being built as well, but that is as I had 4 boxes of them sitting
around untouched! I am just waiting for the plastic boltthrower to come out.

Yeah, that sounds like a cool idea. I can borrow my buddy's didgital camera
and snap a few shots.

Seems interesting, if it's a go-er, I'll convert up/purchase 'Alexandre' and
have at least one unit painted up in my projected colour scheme. (Happy,
Phil, colour got its 'U' back?)

I might end up in the embarrassing position of fronting an article but not
having any models to show... I'll have to do my best to get the bitz for
Kourzan and Melkhen (because they're cheap - Hekate isn't) and maybe
hurriedly paint them up. They should be transportable, but I doubt I'd have
anywhere to paint them down under.

Doesn't GW like to pretend that this group doesn't exist?

Sure, why not? I might end up putting my DH army together in the end. I'd
have to get it all from eBay or discounters, but Guy doesn't have to know
that ;-)

Sure, I'd be thrilled. I've actually managed to procure the vast majority
of my army out through Month 6, so I'd be glad to participate if given
sufficient lead-time. If nothing else, the threat of appearing in a
magazine with 70% of my army still on the sprue should help speed me up on
the assembling/painting front!

but yeah.

An utter waste of time.

First off, GW generates their own content for White Dwarf.

Second, there are real-world "escalation" Leagues out there, in which
people actually buy models, paint them, and play games, etc. The RGMW
Tale is a very weak copy of such a League.

So I conclude that a third-party article based on make-believe is
pointless.

Sometimes I wonder, John - do you post things just for the sake of
going against the flow?

> First off, GW generates their own content for White Dwarf.

I wasn't suggesting writing designer's notes for the latest army book,
you know... What's more, judging by the amount of reprinted fluff in
recent issues (especially in 40k) they seem to be struggling to
generate enough of their own content. If GW wanted a wholly in-house
magazine why bother with submission guidelines at all? There is an
occasional WD series called "Gaming Club" which caters specifically
for this sort of thing.

How many of those Leagues have submitted articles to White Dwarf,
though? The idea is simple - GW likes showing off conversions and
painted models; if someone else makes the effort to convert and paint
those models so much the better for them. It gives GW the opportunity
to use some of White Dwarf's ample filler space on hopefully
eye-catching photos for minimal effort (and considering the pittance
they pay for submissions, minimal cost) on their part, and it might
give some RGMWers a reason to pick up an issue of WD.

> So I conclude that a third-party article based on make-believe is

Wake up, John - we're talking about those people who've got or are
getting the models for their Tale armies here; in that sense it's no
more "make-believe" than the WD Tale. Off the top of my head I can
think of Ken Coble, Desert Lurker, Xis and Chris Valera, and possibly
Christof and Donovan too - that's certainly enough for an article.

People have spent their time and effort contributing to this project;
it's only fair if I put some effort into getting it recognised. If
it's not accepted, so what? It's only my time that's been wasted (and
I've written and sent the WD submission at work, so I don't care...).
If it does get accepted, then it isn't a waste for people who want to
get involved.

Anyway, I've now sent the submission and I'll let the group know if I
hear anything back.

There's dissent, and then there's waiting until everyone else has made their
comments and chipping in with the exact opposite...

I hardly see waiting a couple of days to check out a "crazy" idea as
unreasonable.
