Rig good enough to play games on ultra/high/medium till end 2016 releases?

i was wondering if my rig would last for games to play on ultra,high or medium till end 2016 releases without upgrading it or overclocking (no particular reason why by that time)

specs:

Win 8.1 64bit
i7-4790 3.6ghz
16 GB DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 4GB

ultra, high, and then medium, yes.

The i7 is still kind of a waste, if you could get an i5-4690 and then a gtx 980 (or 980ti) you'd be in a much better position.

It's not better, but games don't use the i7 well enough to justify buying it. The difference in games between the two is usually 2-5 FPS, not worth $100 price difference.

i never looked into the i5,but i do agree your opinion its not worth it those 100$

(unrelated sort of, but) eventually games will use the i7 well enough to be worth the purchase in the future right? I have an i7 and have been pondering just trading it with one of my friends for a while. Also have a 980.

In theory Dx12 can make use of hyperthreading so you can get more processing power out of the i7, but then the same would be true for the i3, so the i3 may be all you need in the future. Games keep flipping and flopping between gpu usage and cpu usage, it really seems to depend on the quality of the developers. As you can see from the article I linked, Tomb Raider, which looks pretty amazing, doesn't give a single s*** what CPu you have (within reason). So the devs made a game that's actually optimized well.

There's not reason to trade it away, as it's unlikely your friends will make better use of it. And it's still more powerful than an i5, just not by enough to justify it's cost over an i5.
