It's also not inconceivable that even just running the adapter cable in typical cable management situations will bend it in the first 1-1.5 inches because nVidia didn't feel the need to secure the cables even though it's running a lot of power through small gauge wires.

And how you concluded that using Seasonic's cable voids the warranty? It's cable from the PSU to GPU made by the manufacturer of the PSU!
We can't tell from the picture. If it's just an adapter, it potentially could. If it's a full length cable that connects to a Seasonic PSU on the other end, then no, it wouldn't. Either way, it shouldn't matter, the adapter should fix the existing issue and not suffer from it itself.

You could cast the first 2" away from the plug in rock-hard epoxy inside a steel reinforcement box and still have problems with copper getting ripped out of the crimps from hard bends after the rigid "strain relief" because only the insulating jacket is constrained. Conductors inside the jacket are still able to move and the extra tension on outer conductors which have to stretch more to make their longer path will still get all the way back to the pins. Using thicker gauge wires won't solve that and HPWR is already calling for #16 which can already handle twice as much current as what HPWR requires.

No cable and connector spec supports having the heck bent out of it for cable management purposes. If you need a sharp or otherwise out-of-spec bend, use an appropriate angled plug or adapter.

...instead of PSU makers making more redneck cable designs...because cables keep catching fire...

We should be telling these hardware companies that consumer PC using as much power as a microwave oven, is completely unacceptable.

Electricity is not getting any cheaper here and last I checked reducing CO2 was kind of a big deal for the planet...

Those ARM-based PC using a fraction of the power x86 does are looking better and better every day.

"It's weird that the problem with the power adapter never showed up in Nvidia's testing. We've checked the GeForce RTX 4090's documentation and online user manuals, and there are no instructions or guidelines on manipulating the 16-pin power connector or its cable. So Nvidia honestly didn't know about the issue. "

They're testing it in open case so the cable never bend, and didn't cause any problem in their system ;)

Just wait until the Geforce 5090 comes to market, we'll need an ATX 24 pin connector for those cards power demands!

In all seriousness though, if 400-600W GPUs are going to become the norm, the PCI-SIG and Intel should really just decide on a compact 48V HPWR connector to avoid bulky high-aspect-ratio connectors and high wire count cables with their current balance problems. At 48V, a single 2x2 MiniFitJr plug would be good for up to 800W and having only four evenly space wires in a 2x2 arrangement would greatly reduce the likelihood and severity of incidental abuse.

^This! I'm curious too. Why would using any other manufacturer's adapter void the warranty?

Because then Nvidia could say it's a manufacturing defect from the 3rd party... Its relatively simple, more hands involved more people to blame. Think of altering suspension on a new vehicle, Raise it too much or lower it too low, changes the dynamics of tire wear, suspension wear on the balljoints, tierods, etc.... But when it comes time to service those worn tires or components and you try to go to the dealership within that 36k miles and they see your upgrades, they're going to say we can't claim this because you changed factory parts and you need to contact your aftermarket vendor for a resolution.

PCI-SIG experienced melted adapters in their testing and sent out warning letters to all their members (including NVIDIA) BEFORE the RTX 4090 was released. NVIDIA ignored the letter and was even quoted as saying that it is NOT an issue.

Or, you know, don't put the side panel on the case. Ever. I've been building for nigh on twenty years and the first thing that's cast in the pitch is the stupid useless side panel. Stick a standard table fan in front of the open case interior and boom automatic hundred+ dollars savings on a gazillion stupid (RGB) fans. I prefer the no nonsense industrial grey-black no FREAKING RGB crap design. My towers look less like Enterprise-Es and more like Borg cubes. And they do assimilate many components against their will.

that line is a lie.

the various TechTubers were all tipped off to the problem by NVidia QTs who all said the company was ignoring the issue. Officially NVidia claims they never had the issue, but this issue was well documented by various techtubers months before the launch due to the internal leaks. Nvidia then went out onto twitter to attack those various tech tubers as liars.

nvidia knew there was a problem, and is still lying about it.

Just stop with the anti-Nvidia FUD already. Nvidia is the one that reported the hotspot/melting problem to PCI-SIG as a result of their own testing.

PCI-SIG-POWER-CABLE-1.jpg

As it turns out, the problem was reported by NVIDIA as a member of PCI-SIG, who were testing various prototype power cables and supplies. They observed that some cables were prone to showing hotspots or even melting due to severe bending or due to excess connection cycles (about 40

See above. This is complete BS.

Just give every 4090 owner a set of 90-degree angle adapters already! Super simple solution. Inch out from the plug, and inch in the direction the cable management needs to go. 4 cheap and simple angle adapters and this problem goes away, permanently. Nvidia and partners will spend less money and suffer less reputational damage if they simply provide adapters with every purchase.

Having specialized modular PSU cables with a right angle end on them seems like yet another nickel and diming move. There's no need for an entire set of wires when a little plastic and metal adapter is sufficient.

Only one adapter is necessary to plug into the connector on the card. The 4 plugs on the other side of the adapter don't need any additional adapters.

.....or tell Nvidia to <Mod Edit> off and keep their 4090 Microwaves and wait until AMDs announcement.

As long as plebs keep buying this garbage at ridiculous prices, they have no incentive to change.
