Hello,
I just put a machine together and I'm looking to get a little boost in proformance.
I'm using:
Intel DP45SG extreme 1333fsb- mainboard
Intel q9550 quad core 45 nm 2.83 ghz- cpu
EVGA 9500gt 512mb ddr3 -video
Kingston ddr3 1333mhz 2 gb- ram
WD 500gb sata
Windows vista

I put it all togetherthe last few nights and its running great. But i was wondering how much better it would run if I were to overclock to 3.00ghz. Do the benifits out way the risks? Will I get 2-3 years out of this processor? With out trying to sound cheap, It is a 300 dollar chip. The whole system ran me about a grand.

Ok, if I were to OC how? I found where the cpu config is in the bios. Do I need to change the voltage, multiplier, or anything on the board?

Thanks for any info,
Tom T

On the other side, OCing from stock settings @ 2,83GHz to 3,0GHz isnt that much of a risktaking. You just should (as always when OCing) keep an eye on the temps.

Actually my guess is that if you raise the FSB to 3,0GHz and you manually set the Vcc voltage, you will end up with a lower voltage than with Vcc on auto at stock speed (2,83GHz). I can drive my E6400 @ 2,8GHz with lower voltage (manually) than what the auto-settings used at stock speed (2,13GHz). Lower voltage will give you a cooler CPU.

Increasing the FSB from 333 MHz. to 400 MHz. will yield an easy OC to 3.4 GHz. All you will need is a better HSF and - maybe - a small voltage increase to vcore.

I noticed that the stock Intel heatsink that came with my Q9550 is about half the size as the one that came with my Q6600.
