I've been reasonably successful (for me anyways) playing wizards recently,
but decided to play an archer. I'm blocked by a river. Whats the
general strategy by which non-magic users get past them? Rivers feel
way too much like an exercise in scumming for the right item(s) early in
the game. My items aren't identified, so my options are fairly limited...

Are there any possibilities I'm missing:
teleport (wand/scroll/spell, trap [blanket, wand of trap creation])
cold (wand, spellbook, ogre mage, white dragon, etc)
swimming (via orange potion)
water breathing (helm, trident, shield)
bridge building (my skill is only 31. I've wasted four [HEAVY] logs so far
and have no extra hatchets to help train in this)

Well, there's always just running through the river with no means of
swimming. A lot of rivers have a small area where you can get past by
going through only 0-3 squares instead of 4, which can often be enough
to get by. Also, you can dig around most (all?) rivers around the edges
of the map (bottom and right edges mainly).

Btw frobnoid, your timestamps are off again.

If you havn't any already, spend a little while in the ID /
pickpocketing to get some carrot juice. Blup will teach swimming in
return for 1 blessed potion of carrot juice, or (I think) several
uncursed ones.

Also note that you can just turn back and go somewhere else until
you're a little more tough. There are plenty of locations to explore
in the early game.

I hadn't even considered digging.
I eventually just plowed through it, all four squares, and survived.
Then had my bows destroyed by a vortex, then encountered ANOTHER river
(two rivers in the CoC before D10!) where I needed to swim a total of six
squares to get through (three swims: two, three and one) where I
eventually died due to drowning. Sigh.

Every time I reboot (which isn't very often), this happens... my bios
battery is dead and I have to guess what time it is when I reset the
machine if I don't have on my watch. (I'm not a very good guesser) Thanks
for letting me know.

I avoid the ID, it feels too scummy...

I tried. I'd finished DDL1, ND1 (aside from the golem), PC and VD, gotten
stuck at a river in the UD, and opted out of the ID. I wasn't yet ready
for the pyramid (not enough skill in detect traps).

Couldn't you just go to the CoC?

Also I don't really consider detect traps necessary for the Pyramid,
once you know the layout of the levels it's not too hard to muscle
through them. My playstyle is a big gung-ho though.

You could get the time from a time server in the internet. What kind of
operating system do you run, and how do you connect to the Internet?

I always just bumble through them myself: the worst that can happen is
losing a nice bit of kit to an acid trap or a bow or a cloak to a fire
trap.

Yup. I'm linux and broadband based, so now I'm setup to sync via rdate on
each reboot (its easier to configure than ntp).

The main danger is to kit you're actually wearing, so if you feel buff
enough, the best thing to do is to just not wear your best cloak and wield
your best bow (etc., but these two are the biggies) while bumbling around the
bottom two levels of the Pyramid.
