Bought an Asus GTX 1080. Unfortunately my power supply connection is 2x6 pins, and new GPU is 8 pins. I had a PC built by Cyberpower and am happy with it I have an 800 Watts - XtremeGear Gaming Power Supply. Is a new PS an option where I make connections myself with supplied cables?

Yeah, I'd read some other not flattering reviews on that PS, but haven't had any issue. Thanks for reply!

that GPU is hardly power hungry, and you don't even need the adapter, a six pin cable won't in anyway limit the voltage/amperage the GPU can make use of, it's only missing a couple ground wires (six pin vs 8 pin) that honestly won't make a difference on a well built power supply. (not that yours is great)

If you use an adapter, they are only going to attach to the existing ground wires on the six pin connector anyhow. I think they're a waste of time and may or may not be worse wire quality than the leads from the PSU.

Hook it up with the six pin imo.

Thanks. This looks like nicest option for now.

So current GPU has 2 connectors, each with 6 pins. How/which goes to GPU?

Believe me I know I'm a dummy here.

either one is fine. they are the same for the purposes here.

Sounds too easy. Really?

I'm not even joking. However, it may not work because the card might go into "no auxillary power" mode (I've never seen this happen , but it might) depending on whether it's looking for one of those ground wires.. but you can't hurt it by doing this if that's what you are asking.

The worst that will happen is you wait for an adapter or a new PSU whatever you decide.

That was what I was asking. I noticed that adapter is only for one set of 6 pins, so my quandary remains as which of the two do I attach adapter to?

I think I'll give your solution a go, and order a PSU anyhow. Money is an object...but not a huge one.

Another question... since it doesn't matter which 6 pin, how about where to place it on GPU, since two pins will be left open.

The keying is the same for six and eight pin, look at the end for the squared keyed sockets and line it up with the ones on the card. normally that means the six pin cable will attach leaving the two empty ground sockets at what you think of as the rear- I/O panel direction.

The .= plastic placement clip on the power cable has a ridge receiver on the outside of the power port on the card...

There's no quandry, choose EITHER six pin cable as stated and tuck the other away.

I'll let you know in hour or so how it turns out. :)

No joy. GPU definitely had power, fancy logo on its side lit up.

Tried both 6 pin connectors. Got message: POWER DOWN AND ATTACH PCIe POWER TO THIS CARD

I'll shop for a PSU.
