rookie needs help with CPU & MOTHERBOARDS

i'm new to building a computer. quick questions:

any FM2+ processor is compatible with any motherboard that supports FM2+? and FM2 does not fit motherboards that support FM3+?

sorry for the newbiest question. i just want to know what fits what. i don't want to purchase something and end up returning it. thanks.
